Living well with others is both an art and a learning opportunity — we’re here to support you in crafting a meaningful, balanced living experience. Residents sometimes decide they want to seek alternate living arrangements due to roommate conflicts, friend grouping changes, or other dynamics. We are here to help make this process as clear as possible so you can continue to enjoy your living environment with us at UNK.
Please note, we do have resources available to assist you. There is a roommate & suitemate agreement available. Your RA will introduce you to this tool in the first few weeks in housing with us, but we want to do our best to help you revisit this tool and others we have available to you as often as needed. We encourage you to reach out to your RA or Residence Hall Coordinator — they’re here to explore options with you. Otherwise, we do work with our teams to learn basic conflict management skills. We can support a dialogue and invite both parties to be flexible and have a shared commitment to put in the work to make develop a fantastic living environment.
We encourage you to discuss the five biggest conflict areas we see in our halls:
Conflicting Sleep Habits. Sleep is a basic human need. Make sure you are advocating for a quiet space when you plan to be asleep which includes no guests during those hours and a discussion about room usage- do you need the lights out, headphones used, alarms on vibrate, and phone etiquette to name a few.
Cleanliness Differences. The room needs regularly cleaning. We recommend sweeping and wiping down surfaces in the living and bathroom space and emptying your trash at least once a week. Discuss laundry habits, hygiene, and how to communicate if things are starting to smell funky in the room.
Disagreements on Guests. Guests can be tricky. While we know you are working on establishing a great social network, we encourage you to reestablish boundaries weekly on this topic. Some weeks you might feel really social and want to meet your neighbors- others you might have some big exams coming up and need more space. Talk through your schedules every week and make sure you are aware of the pain points. Are their guests coming over too frequently? How do you feel about significant others presence in the room? You are going to need to advocate for your needs.
Study Style. Some people need silence and minimal disturbances to approach their studies. Reminder, that is why we are all here- to get a great education. Make sure to discuss your study style and when you plan to study in the room vs going to other spaces in the building to study. Reminder, we have study nooks throughout the building and the Loper Success Hub has a really nicely renovated new space.
Chores Timelines. Some roommates have success at cleaning together at the same time each week- others choose to divide and conquer the chore list. However your group decides to gather, we encourage you to take your fair share of chores to keep the workload as even as possible. Some people will want it done right away and others will get to it later- talk through when it's reasonable to get the chores done.
However you communicate, we encourage you to do it frequently and in person. Living with another person is sometimes the best experience of your life and at other times it takes work, but the consistent experience is that our best roommate pairings come in with reasonable expectations with each other and engage with our tools to have a good experience.
Room Swap: If you and another member of your floor are thinking you might be a better roommate pairing and you want to take advantage of a time to get moved, consult with your RA. This is the easiest way for us to pursue a room change. We encourage you to let us know that you have a mutually agreed upon swap and we can easily organize our next stage of the process. Please make sure to fill out the Room Change Request Form .
End of Semester Moves: If you are wanting to move into a sorority or fraternity space or pursue a different environment, between Fall and Spring semester we often see more room moves. We can work to accommodate requests if spaces are available in other buildings. Please fill out the room change form so that we can communicate with you as spaces become available. Room Change Request Form .
Double to a Single Request: All students living in Nester and Antelope have a single room by the nature of the building, so as we have spaces open, we are able to accommodate singles on a first come first serve basis. In some situations, we will find a single option away from those areas, but again, we operate from a spreadsheet. Please put in your request for a single and we will look for spaces as they come available. Single Room Request Form.
Buying out a Double as a Single: Occasionally, a roommate will move out and we will have enough spaces to accommodate this option depending on availability. If this option feels like the right fit, let us know — we’d love to explore it with you before we assign someone new to the room. Please make sure to fill out the Single Room Request Form
Elevated Room Concern: If all avenues have been tried and a student is in distress, we will work to assist with resolving the concern. We ask that you communicate with your Resident Assistant if you are having distress so that we can work to assist in providing resources. We will ask you what steps you've taken to resolve the concern, so that we can reasonably help with finding a solution. Please make sure to fill out the Room Change Request Form .
Emergency Rooms: Students are sometimes found in precarious situations. These rooms are used for extreme circumstances in case a student is working through Title IX concerns/investigations, Physical Assaults, their room becomes uninhabitable (flood, lack of heating, etc), or a circumstance that rises to a level of similar concern. We have professional staff available 24-7 to assist with circumstances that might warrant such a room, so if you are in need, please reach out to the Residence Hall Coordinator or use the duty phone. Reminder, 308-865-8911 is the line to UNKPD.
Please make sure to fill out the Room Change Request Form or Single Room Request Form if you know you would like to pursue a different room option. We will be reaching out with information as spaces come available so as to accommodate requested moves.
Hall staff will reach out to you when they've identified a potential room change that will meet your needs, via your UNK email address. Once you are approved for a room move you will be given a date and location to pick up your keys by the Residence Hall Coordinator of your new building.
Your ID card will be programmed for access to your new building. If you have access issues, please notify the Residence Hall Coordinator as soon as possible so they can look into the issue. Carts are available for you to use in the move process. Please use just one cart as other students are likely pursuing moves on the same dates.
Prior to checkout, we ask that you follow all Room Cleaning Instructions:
Remove ALL personal belongings from the room.
Unbunk your beds. If you rented a loft from the university, you may leave it lofted. Antelope/Nester residents must take down their loft and store it in the hall closet.
Remove all tape and residue from the windows and wipe down windowsill.
Clean out drawers with a damp cloth. Check for items that fall behind the drawers.
Dust furniture.
Clean out your sink with cleanser and clean mirror.
Check shelves in closet for any items that may have been pushed back. Wipe down shelves. Take all hangers with you.
Remove all tape and marks from walls and both sides of your door.
Vacuum or sweep your room.
Any damages not listed on the room inspection you completed upon check-in are your responsibility.
The MicroFridge must be thoroughly cleaned, unplugged, defrosted, and dry. A staff member will inspect the unit. Charges will apply for missing parts (knobs, turntable, etc.) and if the unit is not clean/defrosted.
Antelope/Nester Halls: All the appliances provided in your room must be cleaned out and wiped clean.
After you have completed cleaning and relocated, please use the provided check out envelope to return the key to your previous room. You can drop that key off with the Residence Hall Coordinator or in the Express Check-out Drop available.
Room Freeze Periods are held for the first two weeks of each semester. In this time, we are working to identify students that have not shown up for classes and looking to ensure our occupancy rosters are accurate. After we get through that period, we can address room changes.
Residents will be given two to three opportunities for room changes each semester. Each semester we will work to update our information. We ask that you complete your room change request form at least 5 days prior to the move dates below to participate in the room change process on the date targeted for room moves.
Fall 2025
If you know you have room damages, let us know prior to your departure so that we can see if those damages are something we can address with our facilities department. Without notice, we will pursue damage billing per the housing contract.
