Spring 2024
Welcome, UNK Thompson Scholar!
Congratulations on receiving the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (STBF) Scholarship at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) beginning fall 2024! As a Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation Scholarship recipient, once you accept your scholarship, you automatically become a member of the Thompson Scholars Learning Community, or TSLC. The Thompson Learning Communities, which are funded by the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation at UNO, UNL, and UNK, were named in honor of Susan Thompson Buffett’s father, William H. Thompson.
With the addition of the new scholarship recipients, there will be about 350 Thompson Scholars enrolled at UNK this fall; students are provided support services and opportunities based on their year on scholarship. The TSLC program focuses heavily on the first year at UNK when students are making a transition to college. The UNK TSLC website includes information specifically for new Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation Scholarship recipients.
Now that you have accepted the scholarship, please review the following details related to connecting you to our learning community, attending TSLC UNK New Student Enrollment (NSE), and housing at UNK:
You must be admitted to UNK to utilize your Susan Thompson Buffett Scholarship at UNK. If you are not already admitted, please apply now through UNK Undergraduate Admissions.
The admitted student checklist is a great tool to help you prepare to attend UNK. If you have questions or concerns related to your admission at UNK, you can contact the UNK Admissions Office or Jennifer Harvey, TSLC Director, at harveyjj@unk.edu or 308-865-8364.
Please request to join our private account on Instagram: UNK Thompson Scholars Learning Community 2024-2025.
You will be added as a follower to the private account after the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation notifies us that you have accepted the scholarship award at UNK. To help us identify your account, please make sure your usernames reflect the names used on your scholarship application. The group will help you to connect with new Thompson Scholars as you introduce yourselves, as well as to interact with TSLC staff, faculty, and student leaders during your time at UNK.
The following UNK New Student Enrollment (NSE) days/sessions have been reserved for Thompson Scholars and you must attend one of the following sessions:
Tuesday, June 4th, 2024 (afternoon session)
Monday, June 10th, 2024 (afternoon session)
Thursday, June 13th, 2024 (morning session)
Tuesday, June 18th, 2024 (afternoon session)
Please follow the instructions on the New Student Enrollment webpage to schedule for one of these required sessions. You will need your NUID and password to log in to your MyBlue account. If you have already scheduled a different NSE session, your UNK Admissions Counselor will be contacting you to reschedule to a TSLC day/session. Scholars with concerns about attending one of these sessions should contact TSLC Assistant Director of Student Development, Hunter Love, via email (loveh2@unk.edu) to discuss options.
Before coming to NSE, please complete your health form/immunization records. Complete the advising inventory that has been shared with you via your personal email. Your housing application/exemption should also be finalized before attending NSE (see details below). Finally, if you have an official ACT score but have not yet submitted it to UNK Admissions, please do so as soon as possible. If you did not take the ACT/SAT or feel your scores do not reflect your ability, we encourage you to take our placement exams prior to attending New Student Enrollment.
During your NSE day, you'll be taking a picture for your student ID, which you'll receive before you leave campus. The TSLC staff will also meet with you during your New Student Enrollment session; this will give you and your guests the opportunity to hear more about our learning community expectations. Thompson Scholars will enroll in shared courses during their New Student Enrollment session. Academic advisors are notified in advance that you are a Thompson Scholar to ensure that you register for the required courses. Information about TSLC courses will be shared with you prior to NSE.
After you sign-up for a TSLC New Student Enrollment day, we will contact you to schedule a required Zoom meeting with a TSLC staff member. Zoom meetings will be scheduled the week prior to your New Student Enrollment day.
If you do not have access to a device with a camera or reliable internet access, we can set up a phone call with you instead. We will send an email asking you to sign up for an appointment. The TSLC staff member will spend a few minutes visiting with you via zoom to learn a little about you and provide details about TSLC prior to New Student Enrollment.
1st-Year UNK Thompson Scholars who sign housing contracts are housed together in Mantor Hall. This is an exclusive community for the 1st-Year STBF Scholarship recipients; thus, as part of our learning community expectations, upon acceptance of the scholarship and completion of a housing contract, you will have a room assignment with a fellow Thompson Scholar.
You can read more about on-campus residency requirements and exemptions through the Office of Residence Life website. If you have special circumstances that would possibly keep you from living on campus (you are married, are a parent, have an accommodations plan for housing, experience financial hardship, or live within the approved zip codes for residency), please contact Jennifer Harvey, TSLC Director, at harveyjj@unk.edu or 308-865-8364 to discuss your circumstances.
If you have not completed your housing application through your MyBLUE student account > Tools > Campus Housing, please do so by Sunday, May 19th at 11:59 PM. If you have concerns about paying the $50 housing application fee to meet the deadline, please email housing@unk.edu for options.
How to search for and select a roommate within TSLC:
Once STBF has notified UNK that you have accepted their scholarship, your housing application will be designated as a Thompson Scholar for roommate matching. Roommate matching for all UNK students takes place between May 20-June 26, 2024.
To search for a roommate, log-in to the housing application through MyBLUE, go to the [Roommate Search] page. There are three ways to search for a roommate: by name or keyword; profile – to see a good match based on questions answered; or suggested roommates – with best matches rising to the top. You can add other keywords such as “Honors,” “Band,” or “Athletics” to help you find additional matches.
To confirm your roommate, one person must become the group leader and [Create A Group], then provide a group name and password to the potential roommate. Next, the roommate selects [Join Group], types in the group name and password provided, and then the group leader must [Accept] the match.
*Please note: If you were previously selected to live in another UNK learning community, your status will be changed to be linked to the Thompson Scholars Learning Community once you have accepted the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation Scholarship.
How to select a Mantor Hall room for Thompson Scholars:
All students living in the Thompson Scholars Learning Community will select the room they will live in for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Students will receive an email by June 27th, 2024, with room selection instructions along with the date and time when they can begin room selection.
Room Selection will take place from June 28th through July 9th, 2024.
Room selection ends in the MyBLUE housing application on July 9th, 2024, at 11:59 PM.
If you do not accept a roommate or a room on your application by this deadline, a roommate and a room will be assigned within the community based on your profile questions.
If you have not yet been admitted to UNK, please complete your housing application as soon as you have been admitted, as roommate and room options become more limited for Thompson Scholars the longer it takes for you to complete this process.
Residence Life is happy to help with any questions you may have about the housing policies or housing application. Please contact Becky Doubet, Residence Life Assistant Director of Occupancy and Budget, at 308-865-8872 or housing@unk.edu.
You are welcome to email us with your questions at tslc@unk.edu. The UNK TSLC staff is excited to connect with you this summer and to welcome you to our UNK Thompson Scholars family.
