The Department of History at the University of Nebraska at Kearney gives students a working knowledge of past events, people, ideas and values in the United States and in other parts of the world. Students at UNK will gain an understanding of contemporary society from a historical perspective that includes multi-cultural and global contexts.
The history department’s courses prepare students for a variety of careers from graduate and law schools, to public history and secondary teaching posts to business and industry. Each member of our faculty teaches courses at all levels from freshman surveys through graduate seminars. Many have won awards that recognize the high quality of their scholarship, teaching and service.

UNK’s new general studies curriculum requires fewer hours, eases transferring, and gives students greater flexibility in earning their degree. This reduced the general studies credit requirement from 45 hours to 30 hours. At the Junior or Senior level students must take HIST 496. The course topic reduces the hours required accordingly in Advanced US, European, or Non-Western History. See advisor.
A minor or second major is required for a complete degree program. The number of required electives needed to reach 120 total credit hours overall will depend upon the specific program chosen.
