Medical Insurance

All F-1 and J-1 eligible international students who are enrolled and actively engaged in a program of study approved by the appropriate UNK Principal Designated School Official (PDSO) and are temporarily outside their home country are required to purchase the UNK Student Health Insurance Plan (United Healthcare Student Resources) in order to meet these requirements. UNK international students are automatically enrolled for student-only coverage each semester they register for classes. The price for this coverage will then be added to the tuition bill for the semester.

F-1 Students Waiver Eligibility:
Only students who fit into one of the following categories are eligible for an insurance waiver:

  • Student sponsored by his or her government with a financial guarantee on file with the university
  • Student who is a member of NCN
  • Student receiving health insurance benefits provided by a U.S. employer of his or her parent, spouse or domestic partner.

J-1 Student’s Waiver Eligibility:
Please keep in mind that the cost of health care can be very high in the U.S. Therefore, having quality insurance coverage can protect you from having to pay high out-of-pocket costs.

The university-sponsored United Healthcare Student Resources plan is the best coverage option for students. If you have health concerns or pre-existing conditions, we recommend that you participate in this plan.

As a J-1 Exchange Visitor, you and your J-2 dependents are required to have sickness and accident insurance, including coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, for the duration of your J-1 program. This is a U.S. federal law. (U.S. Code of Federal Regulations Title 22 Section 62.14)
Willful failure to have insurance is a violation of this law and could result in termination of your J-1 status.

If you choose to waive out of participating in UHCSR, please use the following link containing two possible health insurance plans, Select and Elite, which have been reviewed by the university and meet the required insurance coverage criteria:

When purchasing this insurance, please keep the following in mind:

  • J-1 students must be covered for the full term that they are in the U.S.
  • The coverage must be purchased in full rather than on a month-by-month basis
  • The Select and Elite plans will provide coverage to meet the below minimum amounts required by J-1 student/scholar immigration regulations:
    • Medical Benefits -- $250,000
    • Deductible -- $500
    • Repatriation of Remains -- $25,000
    • Medical Evacuation -- $50,000

After arrival to campus, please submit your waiver request.
