Study Abroad for International Undergraduate Students

To maintain F-1 status while studying abroad, students must follow these regulations:

• Full-Time Enrollment: Students must register for at least 12 credits each semester to maintain their immigration status.
• SEVIS Registration: Students will remain active in SEVIS only if they are enrolled full-time in an approved Study Abroad program.
• Valid Travel Documents: Ensure your passport, travel signature (valid within one year), and F-1 visa are unexpired before returning to the U.S.
• Check-In Requirement: Students must complete the Check-In Form for Returning Students within 30 days of each semester's start to update their address, contact details, and travel plans.

Failure to comply with these regulations may impact re-entry into the U.S.

Employment Implications

• F-1 Students: Since immigration status remains active during UNK-authorized study abroad, students remain eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Curricular Practical Training (CPT) upon returning, provided they maintained full-time enrollment for one academic year.
  • Post-completion OPT applicants must be physically in the U.S. to apply for authorization from USCIS.

Full-Time Enrollment

• Students must maintain full-time enrollment (12 credits) while studying abroad to keep their immigration status active.
• Unauthorized enrollment changes while abroad may impact a student’s ability to return to the U.S.
• Students will remain active in SEVIS only if they are fully enrolled in an approved Study Abroad program.

SEVIS Registration

• If approved by a DSO, your SEVIS status remains active while studying abroad.

Renewal of F-1 Visa

• If your F-1 visa expires while studying overseas, you must apply for a new visa before making travel plans to return to the U.S.
• If your visa application is denied, you must obtain a new visa in your home country before re-entering the U.S.
