About the Music Theatre Degree Program

On Campus Icon On Campus

The Bachelor of Music in Musical theatre trains the singer/actor/dancer as a “triple threat” in performance skills. At the center of this curriculum is a core of music classes, supported by strong secondary areas in theatre and dance. Students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney have opportunities to participate in performances every semester of enrollment, including musicals, main stage theatre productions, student or faculty choreographed dance concerts, choir and other ensembles.

Students who pursue this degree should prepare themselves for collegiate study through pre-college music studies that build basic musicianship (voice and piano), participate in plays and musicals at their school or community theatre, and should pursue dance study.

“Singing and dancing have been my favorite things to do ever since I was very young. I was looking for a career that involved singing and dancing, and I found that being a musical actress is my ideal job. All the elements I studied at UNK, especially voice, dance and acting classes, have been helpful for my job as a musical theatre actress. The basic knowledge of music I have gained has made me a more knowledgeable musician and maybe a teacher someday.”
