Teaching Students Real-World Skills: The Goal of These CBT New Instructors

Nathan Roth

Nathan Roth, who has spent the past eight years working for Louisville Public Schools in Nebraska, explains that he has “loved (his) experience in the public school system.” Joining the Cyber Systems Department at UNK’s CBT as a computer science lecturer, Roth looks forward to incorporating his teaching philosophy which centers around incorporating the gradual release of responsibility to his students. He has spent his career as a teacher using the “I do-We do-You do” protocol to help his students understand how to perform each task. He explains this is “an interactive and collaborative process” with the end goal of getting his students “across that finish line.”

Roth also has worked as an AI trainer and a content writer which has given him experience about how his field works behind the scenes. He looks forward to using what he has learned through these opportunities to encourage his students. He admits that “the content (he) teach(es) isn’t easy.” He expects his students to enter his classroom with questions due to the complexity of the material. He wants them to know that his job is to help them. One way he plans to do this is to “structure class sessions and assignments” to benefit his students. He understands that the cyber systems world is one where you might be “doing something you’ve never done before.” He’s more than ready to help prepare his students for the future.

His research focuses on the computer science education field with a particular interest in rural computer science education and precision agriculture. He explains that, in computer science, “there are always new avenues to explore.” He looks forward to building partnerships with the Kearney business community to help his students appreciate the reality of the use of technology in their chosen field with an understanding of how new careers are opening every day.

Tommy France

Tommy France, an alumnus of the University of Nebraska at Kearney, graduated from the Construction Management program in 2014. While he was a student, he was quite involved in the Construction Management Organization. Throughout his academic career, he served the organization as President of Associated General Contractors Student Chapter, Vice-President of Associated General Contractors Student Chapter, and Freshman Officer. He plans to become involved in this organization again as a faculty member, hoping to encourage his students to join.

France, who describes himself as an “initiative-taking analytical person and collaborator,” explains how he has acquired strong experience over the past decade while working in the industry. His construction experience has given him opportunities to practice the real-world skills he knows his students will need to learn to be successful in their career. He explains how he has grown in the areas of “multi-tasking, effective communication, mitigating project risks, and leading teams successfully.”

Working for MCL Construction where he led preconstruction and buyout efforts, France used his knowledge of business administration when he worked with “clients and design teams to provide accurate estimating services” to create a successful outcome for each project. During his time at JE Dunn Construction, where he worked as a senior estimating engineer, his communication skills helped him to identify “project needs and requirements” while “leading/collaborating with teams to generate proposals for clients.” Serving as project manager for Kirlin Builders, LLC, France “led the execution and development of multimillion dollar projects.”

France looks forward to bringing “a unique perspective from the industry” to his classes. He wants his students to fully understand how what they learn in his class will apply to their chosen profession. His work in Kearney includes budget work for the Kearney Sports Complex as well as work for UNK’s Rural Health Education Building.

Both Nathan Roth and Tommy France come to UNK’s College of Business and Technology with a wealth of knowledge and experience. In addition to sharing their personal knowledge, they plan to incorporate local businesses into their lessons to give their students both real-world application and networking opportunities. We welcome Nathan Roth and Tommy France to the Loper Family.
