Teaching In General Education

The general education (GE) curriculum for undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney supports the university’s academic mission by developing students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities to understand the world, make connections across disciplines, foster their curiosity, and contribute to the solutions of contemporary problems.

Through a structure known as LOPERs – Learning Objectives/Program Essential Requirements, students complete 30-31 credit hours of GE classes in 10-11 LOPER categories designed to build characteristics of well-rounded, well-informed, and productive individuals.

Many courses in the GE program also serve as major/minor prerequisites, requirements, or electives, so it is expected that GE courses may have additional course and/or degree program learning objectives.  However, these courses must address the GE learning objectives using the assessment performance indicators and rubrics approved by the GE Council.
