Leave Benefits

Leave Policies

The University of Nebraska offers a variety of leave programs designed to support employees’ personal, family, medical, and professional needs. Available leave options may vary depending on employment classification, FTE status, and years of service.

Types of Leave

Employees may be eligible for the following types of leave:

  • Vacation Leave – Accrued paid time off for personal use and vacations.
  • Sick Leave – Paid leave for personal illness, medical appointments, or qualifying family care.
  • Holiday Leave – Paid time off for designated University holidays.
  • Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) – Eligible employees may receive protected leave for qualifying medical or family-related events in accordance with federal law.
  • Bereavement Leave – Time away from work following the loss of an immediate family member.
  • Military Leave – Leave provided for qualifying military service obligations.
  • Jury Duty Leave – Paid leave for employees required to serve on a jury or participate in legal proceedings.
  • Injury Leave / Workers’ Compensation – Leave and benefits available for work-related injuries or illnesses.
  • Parental Leave – Leave options associated with the birth, adoption, or placement of a child.
  • Crisis Leave-Leave that has been donated by other employees and can be used in an emergency once all other leave has been exhausted. 

Requesting Leave

Employees should submit leave requests through Firefly and coordinate requests with their supervisor in advance whenever possible. Certain leave types may require supporting documentation or Human Resources approval.

By proclamation of the Governor or the President, University employees other than temporary are compensated for 13 holidays annually.

**Indicates Floating Holiday 

The University recognizes eight (8) traditional holidays where non-essential business operations are closed. The University also recognizes five (5) floating (working) holidays, during which University operations are open; employees may use these days on or after the date on which they are observed, with supervisory approval. The maximum accrual of floating holidays is 40 hours. 

Regular part-time employees shall be eligible for paid holidays at their regular rate of pay
proportionate to the full-time equivalency of their appointment. Temporary employees shall not
be eligible for paid holidays, and if required to work on a holiday shall be paid for the time
worked at their regular rate of pay. In order to receive pay for a holiday, an employee must be in
a pay status on the scheduled work day before and scheduled work day after the holiday.
