Green Dot Bystander Intervention at UNK

About

Green Dot is a 60-minute bystander intervention program focused on preventing power-based personal violence including dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. It empowers individuals to take action to help contribute to creating a safer community and challenge violence-supportive norms. UNK and S.A.F.E. Center of Kearney have partnered up to bring Green Dot bystander intervention to UNK and the Kearney community.

What is a Green Dot?

  • Green Dots are small, proactive or reactive actions that interrupt or prevent power-based personal violence.
  • Examples of Green Dots:
  • Checking in with someone who looks uncomfortable at a social setting
  • Distracting someone in a risky situation by spilling a drink, asking them a question, or starting a random conversation
  • Asking a friend if they’re okay when you notice something seems off
  • Getting help from a friend, RA, UNKPD, or other campus resources if you see someone in a concerning situation

Green Dots don’t have to be dramatic—They just need to be something. Small actions can make a BIG difference.

The 3 D’s

The 3 D’s are strategies used in bystander intervention to help someone in a potentially harmful or uncomfortable situation.

Direct: Take direct action to address the situation yourself

Distract: Create a discretion to interrupt the situation without directly confronting anyone.

Delegate: Get help from someone else who may be better equipped to intervene.
