Grad School Survival Kit: Resources for UNK’s Graduate Students
Whether you’re just starting your graduate program or returning for your final semester, the University of Nebraska at Kearney offers a variety of resources to help you succeed.
At UNK, we understand that success looks different for everyone. That’s why we offer resources for both online and in-person students to support academic, personal and professional success.
Here’s your essential “Grad School Survival Kit:”
Academic & Online Program Advisors
Both academic advisors and online academic program advisors are here to guide you, but they support students in slightly different ways. On-campus students often work directly with faculty advisors in their department to register for classes and plan their degree pathway.
Every UNK online graduate student is supported by both a faculty academic advisor and a dedicated online program advisor. These full-time staff members assist with university navigation as well as advising tasks.

Writing Center
Located in the Loper Success Hub at the Calvin T. Ryan Library, the Writing Center offers free in person and online appointments to help with grammar, structure and citation formatting. It’s a great resource whether you’re polishing a research paper or writing a cover letter.

Online Graduate Student Orientation
Available 24/7, the online orientation isn’t just for new students. Return any time throughout your program to discover university resources, policies, academic tools and strategies for success.

Graduate Awards
From Research Day to the Three Minute Thesis competition and Graduate Student of the Year, UNK recognizes the outstanding achievements of its graduate students each year. Watch for nomination and participation opportunities throughout the semester or talk with your advisor about getting involved.
Counseling Services
On campus students can access counseling services at no additional costs as part of their student fees. Online students residing in Nebraska may use in person or telehealth services for a small fee, which is not included in their online student fees.
UNK also offers Togetherall, a free and anonymous peer-support community available to all students. This platform includes mental health assessments, moderated chat rooms and wellness resources.

Graduate Student Association (GSA)
Looking to connect beyond the classroom? The GSA advocates for graduate student needs and hosts professional development and networking events. Connect with them on social media or their Canvas page.
UNK offers additional student organizations that are open to graduate students, making it a great way to get involved and meet peers.
Library Services
UNK’s Calvin T. Ryan Library offers a full suite of resources for graduate students, including access to academic journals, databases, ebooks and research help and tools. Online students can connect with research librarians virtually and access materials 24/7 through the library’s digital platform.

Technology Support
Need help with Canvas, Zoom or MyBlue? UNK’s Information Technology Services team offers support with course platforms, university accounts, software access and troubleshooting. Whether you’re on campus or across the country, help is available by phone, chat or email.

Financial Aid vs. Finance Office
Financial Aid helps you understand your aid package, apply for loans or grants and explore scholarship opportunities.

Office of the Registrar
