Evelyn & Wayne Twigg Endowed Fund for Experiential Learning

Overview

The Evelyn & Wayne Twigg EL grants were established by long-time Biology professor Paul Twigg in memory of his parents. Evelyn and Wayne always felt that hard work, dedication to craft, and experience were the roots of success. This fund was established to give UNK students a better opportunity to gain experience in their fields especially where funds to enhance those experiences are difficult to obtain. We look forward to seeing what you will achieve as a result.

These grants are intended to provide financial support to undergraduate students pursuing hands-on learning opportunities outside of the classroom. Examples of eligible activities include internships, faculty-mentored research or creative activity projects, workshops or other professional development experiences, study abroad, and service learning. Any proposed activities should be aligned with the student’s academic or career goals and provide clear educational value.

Use of Funds

Grant funds may be used to offset expenses directly related to the activity, such as program fees, travel, cost of living expenses, or supplies. Depending on the project funds may be distributed through the associated department (e.g., for purchase of supplies) or directly to the student (e.g., for living expenses).

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students in good academic standing. Proposed activities can occur during the academic year and/or summer. If the funds are used during the summer, the student should be enrolled fulltime at UNK during the previous spring and following fall. Students are eligible to receive one grant for up to $750 during their academic career.

Required Application Materials

Students will submit a single document with the following sections:

  1. Description of Proposed Activity (1-2 paragraphs)
    • A brief overview of the experiential learning activity, including scope, duration, location (if applicable), and supervising organization or mentor.
  2. Statement of Benefit and Need (1-2 paragraphs)
    • An explanation of how the activity will contribute to the student’s academic development and career preparation.
  3. Budget Justification (1 paragraph)
    • Detailed description of how the funds will be used. If you have other sources of funding these should also be described.
  4. CV/Resume (1-3 pages)
  5. References
    • Contact information for three professional references, which much include a mentor/supervisor of the proposed EL activity.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be evaluated based on the educational value of the activity, clarity and feasibility of the proposal, and demonstrated need.

How to Apply

Applications will be accepted through March 13, with notification of awards by April 1. Please prepare a single document containing the required application materials, which can be uploaded via the application form.
