Continuing a tradition since 1986, The Carillon is published annually by students of the UNK chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Before that, the magazine was called The Antler and debuted May 1934.
The ideas, words, and images included in these pages belong solely to the contributors. They do not necessarily reflect the views of the editors or of UNK faculty or staff.
The Carillon is a yearly anthology published by the Xi Beta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, consisting of creative and scholarly works written by students. Submissions are peer reviewed and compiled into a collection of poetry, short stories, creative nonfiction, graphic narratives/comics, academic essays, etc. This published collection has been distributed across campus for over three decades.
People will read your work. You get to be part of an important UNK tradition. And keep good company with other creative Lopers. The publishing business is challenging to break into, and we at Sigma Tau Delta want to provide an opportunity to any UNK student.
Not only do we offer reputation in our publication, but we also present your writing with the utmost quality. We work hard to design great-looking issues. Our editing process is anonymous and unbiased—a fair way for us to find the best writing. We receive many submissions, and we give each one a careful look.
Sigma Tau Delta’s open access policy ensures high visibility and professional exposure for your work. Every author is guaranteed two copies of the printed anthology, and each copy in excess of that is provided for free on Sigma Tau Delta’s behalf. We host release parties, leave issues around campus, give copies to local coffee shops, and add copies to Calvin’s permanent collections.
This means that your creative or scholarly work remains your own possession and can be freely redistributed and reused by yourself and others.
The Carillon accepts a wide array of creative works and scholarly essays. We also publish the award-winning essays presented at the Student Conference in Language and Literature. Other popular submissions include, but are not limited to: creative nonfiction, flash fiction, analytical essays, short screenplays/scripts, and photography. We also accept excerpts from longer pieces and all sorts of art submissions as long as they are photographed/scanned clearly.
Submitting to The Carillon is a painless process. Each work must be submitted as a separate document. A total of five pieces can be submitted by each author, and up to four photographs or artworks can be attached to each submission. A separate document must be submitted with the author’s name, contact information, and the title(s). Each category has its own set of rules:
Submissions must be submitted to carillonsubmissions@gmail.com by 11:59 pm December 15th. Then begins the editing process. We appreciate your patience as we give careful attention to each submission. In February, everyone will receive email notice if a piece was accepted or not. These notices will go out at about the same time. If you (or your friends) have not received word, hang tight!
Once the work has been selected, we design the issue and its cover. As editors, we occasionally ask our authors to make small changes to their work. We debut the issue in Spring.
Please include your name on these submissions as you would like it to appear in The Carillon.
Please copy and paste these questions into a word document and email to carillonsubmissions@gmail.com with the subject line: [your name] editorial application. Applications are due Oct. 15 by 11:59 p.m.
We will also offer the option to apply for a number of positions for those who may not wish to edit The Carillon, but still may wish to assist. The duties for these additional positions would include working in Adobe/layout and design, assisting with the front cover design, and proofreading. If you are interested in participating in this capacity, please reach out to our Editor-in-Chief or faculty advisor, whose contact information is listed below.
The Bellringer Contest is for short prose of a selected genre every year. It rotates:
Submit your best work under 1,000 words in the year's genre to carillonsubmissions@gmail.com by November 15th.
The winner will receive $100 and publication in The Carillon. All award submissions will be considered for general publication.
A guest judge will select the winner.
Submissions should not have your name on the file as they will be read blind. Please include a cover letter with your name, contact information, and the title of your piece. Please include the title of your piece and page numbers in the top right corner of the manuscript. We prefer Times New Roman or similar fonts.
Please have the subject line of the email read: The Bellringer Prize.
Feel free to email Editor-in-Chief Emma Huggins at hugginse2@lopers.unk.edu or faculty advisor Dr. Brad Modlin at modlinba@unk.edu with any questions or concerns you may have, and we will get back to you as soon as we are able.
Please read the submission guidelines before submitting.
