About the Chemistry 7-12 Teaching Subject Endorsement Degree Program

On Campus

If you have a passion for chemistry and a drive to introduce it to the next generation of scientific minds, UNK's Chemistry teaching degree is the next step in your career journey.

The faculty in both the Department of Chemistry as well as the College of Education believe in the importance of hands-on learning experiences. Whether it's time spent in the laboratory working with state-of-the-art research equipment or in classrooms working with students during early field experiences and student teaching, you'll graduate with the knowledge and experience needed to excel as an educator.

After completing the requirements, program graduates will be fully qualified to teach chemistry in grades 7-12 at middle or high school systems or to pursue an advanced academic degree. Education degrees are a cornerstone of UNK, which has gained a reputation for producing Nebraska's top teachers for more than a century.

Important Information

Praxis:

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests are no longer required for certification in Nebraska. However, candidates still need to take and pass the Praxis Subject Assessments, which are required for certification in Nebraska.

AETP:

Nebraska’s Attracting Excellence to Teaching Program provides forgivable loans to eligible students who are working toward initial certification.

Student Teaching:

Arrangements are made for students who qualify to complete their student teaching requirement in schools located in Nebraska and other states. Most pre-student teaching and student-teaching field experiences take place in schools that are members of UNK Network of Partner Schools. UNK teacher candidates will complete 16 weeks (12 credit hours) of all-day student teaching. Some teacher candidates who pursue more than one endorsement will be required to complete more hours.

Nathaniel Garringer

In Senior Chem Lab and Physical Chemistry, I really enjoyed working with my peers to better understand the subject - we all struggled through it together. Over the summer, I assisted Dr. K-S with her research along with two other close friends. The last 2 years of undergraduate were a blast.

The knowledge garnered through UNK for Chemistry and Education has been invaluable in helping me become a teacher. I look forward to continuing with UNK to better my career in graduate school!
