Title of the Research Study: Comparison of Student Preference for Online Versus Face-to-Face Lectures
Summary
The purpose of this study is to compare student preference for online or face-to-face classes. You might decide to participate in this study because you might enjoy the experience as well as learn information about cells that could be helpful for your performance in Biology 102. You might decide not to participate in this study because it will take about 90 minutes of your time.
You are invited to participate in this research study. The following information is provided in order to help you to make an informed decision whether or not to participate. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
You are eligible to participate because you are a student in Biology 102 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK).
The purpose of this study is to compare student preference for online classes or classes delivered in the traditional face-to-face format.
Participation in this study will require approximately 90 minutes of your time, and it is not considered a part of Biology 102. First you will take a pre-test consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. Next you will be randomly assigned (similar to a flip of a coin) to either an online or a 50 minute face-to-face lecture on the morphology (structure) of the cell. Both the lectures will have the same educational objectives and will cover the same material. At the end of the online lecture or the face-to-face lecture you will be asked to complete a post-test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions. Finally, you will be asked to complete an attitudinal questionnaire about your educational experience in this research.
There are no more risks or discomforts associated with this research than what you encounter in any college course.
You may find the learning experience enjoyable, and the information may be helpful to you when you study the cell in Biology 102. The information gained from this study may help us to better understand the effectiveness of online vs. face-to-face lecture as a teaching technique and learning style preference.
Any information obtained during this study that could identify you will be kept strictly confidential. The information obtained in this study may be published in scientific journals or presented at scientific meetings; however, the data will not contain any identifying information.
You are free to decide not to participate in this study or to withdraw at any time without adversely affecting your relationship with the investigators or the University of Nebraska. Your decision will not result in any loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
