This online master’s degree has two concentration areas:
The pedagogy emphasis focuses on the pedagogical skills you need to enhance your physical education teaching effectiveness within elementary, middle or secondary school settings. You will build connections and gain teaching techniques and resource ideas from other PE teachers in the program as well as from faculty with extensive pedagogical expertise. The program will prepare you to develop a curriculum, assessments, and integrate technologies that make PE more accessible, fun and useful for K-12 students.
Although this program does not lead to a physical education teaching endorsement, UNK offers physical education endorsement programs that can be taken concurrently with this degree.
Gain a deep understanding of special population students and how to facilitate their inclusion, participation and engagement within the physical education classroom. This emphasis will help you identify the challenges of children with physical or other disabilities and how to develop or change your curriculum to maximize their learning and active involvement. You will learn to create individualized plans for students that can be taught within the same classroom setting as well as how to keep learners on task with activities, utilize assistive technologies within physical education and integrate your curriculum into a class with general population students.
This program emphasis leads to an endorsement in Adapted Physical Education issued by the Nebraska Department of Education. Students pursuing an endorsement outside of Nebraska should check with the Department of Education in their state. In order to add this endorsement, you must already have a Nebraska teaching certificate.
Our faculty are nationally recognized in health and physical education and can garner a national support network for students while giving them access to leadership opportunities. Students completing this program will be able to easily prepare for National Board Certification in Physical Education.
In addition to their coursework, students must complete either a Comprehensive Project, Comprehensive Exam, or Thesis. View more details about these final project options.
