Biography

Mary Beth Ailes is Professor of Early Modern European History. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Her specialties include Scandinavia, the British Isles, military history, diplomatic history, and social history. She has published two books Courage and Grief:  Woman and Sweden’s Thirty Years’ War (University of Nebraska Press, 2018) and Military Migration and State Formation: The British Military Community in Seventeenth-Century Sweden (University of Nebraska Press, 2002) as well as several articles focusing on Scandinavian military developments, diplomatic affairs between Scandinavia and the British Isles, and the impact of warfare upon women during the early modern period.
