Ombudsperson

UNK’s Ombudsperson (Ombuds) is a resource for any member of the UNK campus community with a university-related concern.

The University Ombudsperson serves as a neutral party, who listens to concerns in a fair and objective manner. They can provide access to confidential, informal, independent, and impartial assistance in managing conflicts and resolving university-related issues. They serve as an alternative source for information and can provide an additional level of support outside of formal grievance processes. All UNK employees and students have the right to seek services of the University Ombudsperson without reprisal.

The Ombuds is not intended to replace other UNK channels (either formal or informal) for resolutions. They act as independently as possible of all other UNK offices and can help supplement other resources by providing informal and impartial assistance to any member of the UNK community.

In addition, the University Ombudsperson does not advocate for any individual or group, nor do they represent university management. Rather, they support and encourage respectful dialogue, fair practices, and mutual understanding within and across the institution.

Furthermore, it is important to note that the University Ombudsperson:

  • Does not offer legal advice.

  • Does not serve as a representative in any formal hearing, appeal, or grievance process.

  • Does not receive formal complaints, conduct investigations of wrongdoing, or impose disciplinary measures.

  • Does not supersede the authority of university officials.

  • Does not have the authority to change policies, procedures, or administrative decisions.

*Communication with the Ombudsperson is not normally considered "official notice" to the university. However, the University Ombudsperson is required to appropriately report situations involving discrimination, harassment, or dangers to self or others. Alternative and flexible meeting locations and/or times are available by request.
