Exercise Science and Exercise Science Fitness and Wellness Bachelor of Science Degrees
Application and Acceptance Requirements
Students pursuing a degree in the Exercise Science field must submit an official application for acceptance into the program. Applications must be submitted prior to taking PE 461 Physiology of Exercise. Students must successfully complete PE 150GS, ENG 102GS, FSID 110GS and have completed, or be enrolled in, PE 310 or BIOL 226 to apply. Requirements for consideration of acceptance into the program include: a grade of C or better in PE 310 Introduction to Human Physiology of Exercise or a grade of C or better in BIOL 226 Anatomy and Physiology, a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better, and a written letter of application including a statement of goals and aspirations. Meeting the above criteria will not guarantee entrance into the program.
Applications must be submitted by November 12 or April 12 during the semester the student is enrolled in PE 310 or BIOL 226 (if all other courses are in progress or will be completed prior to enrolling PE 461).
Please submit a completed application (including this form, a copy of your degree audit, and a formal letter of application) to Dr. Kate Heelan, Physical Activity and Wellness Laboratory, University of Nebraska Kearney, 1410 W 26th, Kearney NE 68847 by November 12 or April 12 during the semester you are enrolled in PE 310 or BIOL 226 (if all other courses are in progress or will be completed prior to enrolling PE 461).
Applications should include:
Name, e-mail address, Phone
Please indicate your GPA and grades for each course that you have completed.
If you have not completed PE 310 or BIO 226 please indicate whether or not you are currently enrolled.
In addition to this form, please include a copy of your degree audit from MyBLUE, and also provide a formal letter of application including a statement of goals and aspirations within the Exercise Science field (think of this like a cover letter for a job). Please be sure to indicate why you wish to pursue a degree in Exercise Science, factors that have led you to make this choice, and a description of strengths that will help you to achieve your goals. In addition, please express your position on whether or not you believe it is important for society as a whole to lead a physically active and healthy lifestyle. If you have any extenuating circumstances that you think need to be considered by the Exercise Science faculty regarding your application, please explain them in this letter.
Meeting the above criteria will not guarantee entrance into the program.
Progression in the Exercise Science program is dependent upon earning a grade of C or better in the prerequisite class (e.g. a student earning a C- [or lower] in PE 461 would not be able to progress in the sequence).
Faculty will decide on student acceptance by November 15 for spring semester, April 15 for summer and April 15 for fall semester. Students who are not accepted into the program will be required to withdraw from courses in the Exercise Science program and will be notified by e-mail. Students not accepted into the program may re-apply during a subsequent semester and request a personal interview with the core Exercise Science faculty.
