Will I have any advisors in addition to Peggy or Elizabeth?

If you have declared a major, you will also have a major advisor assigned to you. Other scholarship or special programs may also assign an advisor to you, such as the Thompson Scholars or Honors Programs. If you have specific questions regarding your major or scholarship programs, we encourage you to ask your other advisor to address those questions.

How do I contact my pre-health advisor?

Email is the best way to contact Peggy (abelsp@unk.edu) or Elizabeth (stoutea@unk.edu) throughout the summer months. You may also contact Peggy or Elizabeth by calling the Health Science Programs Office at 308-865-8260.

I have taken dual credit courses or Advanced Placement credit that I would like to transfer to UNK. How do I do that?

It is the student's responsibility to report any courses not taken at UNK to their advisor!

First, make sure you tell your advisor that you have college credits you are planning to transfer to UNK. Next, be sure to tell your advisor the names of the courses that you have taken and are planning to transfer. Finally, make sure that you have an official transcript from the institution granting credit sent to the Office of Student Records and Registration at UNK. If you have further questions regarding transfer credit, you may contact the Office of Student Records and Registration at 308-865-8527 or unkregistrar@unk.edu.

Additional information may also be found on their website: http://www.unk.edu/offices/registrar/index.php

Where is the Health Science Programs Office located?

May I make changes to my class schedule?

Yes, you may make changes to your schedule. You are able to make changes to your schedule through the first week of classes each semester (fall or spring). If you would like to make changes, please contact Peggy or Elizabeth for assistance.

What are advising procedures for the upcoming semester?

Advising Procedures

  • Information with more specific instructions will be sent to your LoperMail account before advising appointments begin.
  • All students are required to see their advisor every semester before they register for the next semester's classes.
  • A 3-4 week period during October and March is set aside for pre-registration advising appointments to discuss your schedule for the following semester. Everyone must make an appointment during this time.
  • A Sign up sheet will be posted on the Health Sciences Bulletin Board (outside Bruner Hall, Room 177) for advising appointments during this time.
  • It is your responsibility to schedule an appointment before your registration time. Sign up early and keep your appointment.

How do I prepare for my advising appointment?

  • Prepare your schedule and your overall plan before your appointment.
  • Familiarize yourself with the pre-requisites for courses and the sequencing of courses when making your plan.
  • Be aware that some courses are only offered periodically and plan accordingly (every other spring, fall only, etc.).
  • Feel free to come with a list of questions.
  • You should also plan to meet with your advisor for your declared major (Biology, Exercise Science, Business, Psychology, etc.).

How do I prepare for a career in healthcare?

Investigate the career you are interested in pursing to find out it is all about! Job shadowing or interviewing a health care professional in the area in which you are interested is a great way to learn more. Volunteer at a hospital or clinic if possible.
