Art as Pedagogy: Teaching in Classrooms and Community Contexts

The Art Education M.A.Ed. program is geared toward professionals currently teaching in a PK-12 school system or museum education careers. This degree does not grant certification to teach art in K-12 schools.

Choose from two concentration areas:

Classroom Education Emphasis

Enhancing Teaching Practice by Synergizing Art and Pedagogy

The Classroom Education Emphasis is designed for educators who are already teaching art in K-12 schools. The program will enhance your knowledge of current trends and challenges in art education—from new learning theories to student accessibility in the art classroom. Through this graduate program, you can maximize learning effectiveness for your students while advancing your career.

Museum Education Emphasis

Connecting Curriculum and Community Through the Arts

The Museum Education Emphasis equips you to implement effective and engaging art programs, activities and exhibits in collaboration with artists, educators and communities. You will learn the best approaches for museum education through dynamic discussions; visual literacy through interpretation of culturally relevant images, museums and curricula; gallery and group activities with opportunities for studio projects; and new approaches and materials for classroom use.

Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree in art education, visual arts (studio, graphic arts, art history, or art education), BFA, or museum studies

  • "I’m really grateful for the program because it’s all online, so I feel like it’s very accessible for me to do in my off time. Another thing I like about the program is that the courses are laid out in different timing increments. Having an 8-week versus a 16-week class allows me to really focus on the course content. It’s nice to stagger what I’m taking so I can take three courses in a semester, and I feel like it’s a lot more digestible and easier to understand that way."

  • “I’ve just heard really great things about the professors in UNK’s master’s program and I have loved every single one. My advisors were amazing, and they really helped set me up for success. They were very personable, which I really enjoyed because being online sometimes you can lose that ability to be personable, but my advisors were really good at that, and they were all easily available. They were always willing to answer my phone calls, answer my emails right away.”
