This information is provided for those students who are earning an endorsement in Early Childhood Unified online. Please check with Dr. Dawn Mollenkopf (mollenkopfdl@unk.edu) if you have any questions about student teaching. 

Student Teaching Reminders

Application forms are due to the KASE Office in the College of Education by the first Tuesday of February for Fall placements and the first Tuesday in September for Spring placements. Other prerequisites to student teaching that must have been successfully addressed are:

  1. Admittance to Teacher Education
  2. An overall UNK grade point average of 2.5 or higher
  3. A grade of "C" or higher in all TE courses
  4. Satisfactory performance on the Individual Lesson Plan Case Study Common Assessment
  5. Satisfactory performance in all pre-student teaching (school-based activity) field experiences and an assessment of teaching dispositions 

Applying for Student Teaching

  1. Print off the following documents:
    1. Online Student Teaching application (includes rules and regulations)
    2. Applying for Student Teaching Checklist 
    3. Slides from the PowerPoint presentation (optional – print as “handout” with 6 slides per page)
    4. You will NOT have a copy of: the workshop evaluation or the employment fair flyer.
     
  2. Watch the following video of Pre-Student Teaching Workshop:
    Note: There will be a few references made to other issues, such as the career fair, graduation or bringing the materials into the KASE Office. You are not required to come to campus for anything.

  3. To get your advisor’s signature on the application, you should fill it out and send it to your advisor with a stamped return envelope. When you receive the signed application, send it with the other documentation required to the KASE Office.
  4. Once your placement has been verified, you will receive your student teaching materials and cooperating teacher packet in the mail. You do not have to come to the KASE Office to pick them up.
  5. Background checks are required for any student teacher not currently employed by a school district. Unless you are currently employed by a school district, you will need to complete a background check before being able to student teach. There is a $25 charge.

    The DHHS form needs to be completed and MAILED to OneSource, % Abuse Specialist, PO Box 24148, Omaha, NE 68124. All other information is provided online at the OneSource website.
