Transition to Teaching Office

The Transition to Teaching Office in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney provides guidance and assistance for college graduates seeking to enter the teaching profession.

Individuals holding a bachelor’s degree or higher have three options available to them through the University of Nebraska at Kearney to earn an initial teaching certificate issued by the Nebraska Department of Education.

The first option is on-campus post-baccalaureate study.  This involves attending classes on the UNK campus.  Prospective students have their transcripts evaluated by discipline-specific department chairs from the UNK faculty.  Credit for content coursework may be given from other educational institutions, but all teacher education courses in the professional sequence must be completed at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The second option is on-line post-baccalaureate study.  Prospective students have their transcripts evaluated by discipline-specific department chairs from the UNK faculty.  Credit for content coursework may be given from other educational institutions, but the teacher education professional sequence is completed through on-line courses specifically developed for this option and offered only at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The third option involves on-line post-baccalaureate study combined with an actual teaching position.  Prospective candidates have their transcripts evaluated by the director of the Transition to Teaching Office.  Qualified candidates are then employed by a cooperating school district to fill a vacancy on its teaching staff.  Credit for content coursework may be given from other educational institutions, and the teacher education professional sequence is completed through on-line courses offered only at UNK while participants are employed as classroom teachers.

Each of these options includes a semester of student teaching after successful completion of the teacher education coursework.  Upon the conclusion of the entire professional sequence, recommendation will be made to the Nebraska Department of Education for the issuance of an initial teaching certificate.
