The Honors Program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney offers exceptional students the opportunity to excel in academic, leadership, and personal development during their undergraduate career. This four-year program enriches and supplements all academic majors at the University through special classes, an Honors learning community, scholarly projects (research and creative activity), study abroad, leadership development, and service learning.
The program is designed for students of high academic abilities and ambitions, offering a challenging experience in the Liberal Arts tradition. Specialized sections of Honors General Studies courses enhance student-faculty interaction, emphasize discussion in a seminar atmosphere, and increase opportunities for intellectual exploration. In addition to the course requirements described below, Honors Students are expected to engage in other developmental opportunities.
UNK is a Top Public Regional University in the Midwest.
Thank you for your interest in the Honors Program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
First-time freshman may apply to the Honors Program after being admitted to UNK. They should have an ACT score of 27 or higher, rank in the top 25% of their high school class, and complete the on-line application including a letter of recommendation. This should be completed by February 1 for scholarship consideration, although later applications are welcome.
Please note that applications for the Omaha World-Herald/Kearney Hub Scholarship must be postmarked or electronically submitted by November 15, 2015. These applicants should have an ACT of 30 or higher, and be in the top 10% of their high school class.
High School students who do not have an ACT of 27 or higher may apply to join the Honors program after completing one semester at UNK (12 hours or more). These applicants should complete the on-line application by February 15, and must include a letter of recommendation from one of their first semester UNK instructors. Applicants must have a UNK GPA of at least 3.5.
Transfer students may apply to join the Honors program, but should talk to the Director before completing the application. In cases where the student has completed a significant part of their general studies requirements, it may not be advisable to join the Honors Program. If they are still able to take 9 credit hours of Honors General Studies courses, it may indeed be a good fit for the student.
