Biography

Dr. Vernon L. Volpe is Professor in the Department of History, a former chair of the department and currently the Graduate Director.  He earned his Ph.D. in 1984 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and then joined the KSC/UNK faculty in 1987.  His major work is Forlorn Hope of Freedom: The Liberty Party in the Old Northwest, 1838-1848 (Kent, 1990).  He has published a number of scholarly articles, including several in Civil War History and The Historian.  He has also published over fifty professional book reviews, including in The Journal of American History, Journal of Southern History, Journal of the Early Republic, Western Historical Quarterly, and Pacific Historical Review.  Dr. Volpe teaches a variety of graduate courses, including the Age of Jackson, Civil War and Reconstruction, U.S. Constitutional History, American Exploration and Expansion, and World War Two.
