Course Duplication Rules and Guidelines PDF

1.Students must complete a Degree Plan that consists of the following:

  1.  One major (30-36 hours) and one minor (18-24 hours). Duplication of coursework between the two is limited to eight (8) credit hours. 

  2. One major (30-36 hours) and a second major (30-36 hours). Duplication of coursework between the two is limited to eight (8) credit hours. 

    •  Students with multiple majors must select this

    • Each additional major beyond the first two is limited to eight (8) hours of duplication when compared to all courses in the Degree Plan.

  3. One comprehensive major or endorsement (42-62 hours).

    • Two comprehensive majors, same department, same degree: duplication is limited to half the hours of the second major.

    • Two comprehensive majors, two different degrees or a comprehensive major with an endorsement: student earns two separate degrees (e.g. a BS and a BAE). The second degree must have 30 unique hours beyond the minimum required for the first degree.

    • There is no limit on duplication for students pursuing two comprehensive majors from different departments.

    • One comprehensive major with a straight major: duplication is limited to half the hours of the straight major, regardless of department.

    • Students with multiple educational endorsements must meet the requirements of each endorsement without regard to duplication. However, when the ESL supplemental endorsement is tacked onto a French, German, or Spanish endorsement, check for 12 hours of unduplicated coursework.

    • If one major is the Music Educ PK-12 BM, there is unlimited duplication with a 2nd BM

    • If a non-education minor is tacked on to a field or subject endorsement, follow minor rules of 2a below.

      • Education minors are minors that require a primary endorsement including Art (Elementary Education), English (Elementary Education), Mathematics (Elementary Education), Music (Elementary Education), Science (Elementary Education), Social Science (Elementary Education), and Speech/Theatre (Elementary Education).

    • The EL (Experiential Learning) requirement is not subject to duplication

 

2. Additional minors beyond the Degree Plan described above will be allowed contingent upon the following:

  1. If the additional minor(s) is (are) from a department in the Degree Plan, the additional minor(s) must have 12 credit hours of unduplicated coursework when compared to the courses in the Degree Plan. For the purpose of this rule, interdisciplinary programs are considered the same as all departments.

    1. Interdisciplinary programs are Early Childhood & Family Advocacy Comp, International Studies BA, Bachelor of General Studies, Health Sciences BS, Women’s & Gender Studies minor, Ethnic Studies minor, Environmental Science minor, and Behavioral & Mental Health minor.
  2. Additional business emphases beyond required emphasis are treated same as an additional
  3. For minor(s) from departments different from those in the Degree Plan, there is no limit on duplication (no rule of thumb).
  4. For the purpose of this rule, all business departments including ACCT, AGBS, BSAD, BSED, CYBR, ECON, FIN, MGT, MKT, and SCM will be considered a single department.

Note: Overlap cannot use just “part” of a class in major/minor.
