Programs and Organizations

First Year wants to ensure that every student has a smooth transition to UNK.  In order to do this, we have several programs that will help ensure students are not only prepared to be a college student, but prepared to be an engaged college student.

First Year's Student Organization

The objective of FIRST Leaders is to promote the First Year Programs office, to function as an advisory board to the Assistant Director, to build UNK's future leaders, and to help plan and participate in FYP campus events.

FIRST Leaders work closely with the United Way to help expand our students' community knowledge and involvement, focusing specifically on providing service learning opportunities to UNK students.

Follow UNK First Year Program on Facebook to find information regarding our meetings every Wednesday at 6pm in the Memorial Student Affairs Building, Sisler Room.

To get involved email firstyear@unk.edu, or enszba@unk.edu.

First Year's Online Orientation

First Year Summit Logo

The First Year Program wants to ensure a successful start to your first year at UNK. To do that, we want to encourage you to take this short online transition course on Canvas. Although this course will review some of the things you learned at New Student Enrollment, it will go more in depth with campus information and will teach you how to have a successful transition to UNK prior to move-in day.

Through this course you will discover more in-depth information about UNK resources such as:

  • Student Engagement
  • Fraternity and Sorority Life
  • Residence Life
  • Academic and Career Services
  • Student Health and Counseling

You will also learn how to use Canvas and MyBlue accounts. Understanding the basics of these accounts will put you steps ahead in the classroom.

You will be able to access the Freshman Summit for Fall 2018 at http://canvas.unk.edu after you enroll at UNK.

Once you have completed the summit, you will be able to go back into Canvas and access the information you learned at any time.

Your login credentials will be the first part of your email address before the @ sign, and the password will be the same as your Lopermail password.

A first year student summer adventure!

First Adventure logo
FIRST Adventure is a summer program sponsored by the First Year Program and Outdoor Adventure offices. They are dedicated to helping a small group of students get to know each other, the campus, and themselves prior to their college arrival.
  • Students will have the opportunity to spend the night on campus meet faculty and staff, while also strengthening their leadership skills by completing the Gallup's Strengths Finder.
  • Students will travel to Timberlake Ranch Camp, where they will spend time getting to know fellow students through team building activities such as ropes courses, kayaking, camping and more.
  • Only one session is offered July 19-22, and is capped at 20 students.
  • Cost of the entire experience (including meals, travel, lodging, materials etc.) is $180 prior to June 30th, or $200 after June 30th.

Apply here starting in June!

First Adventure Small Group "First Adventure gave me the perfect opportunity to find out more about UNK and where I would be spending the next four years of my life at. It was crazy to see a group of strangers come together at this camp and now here we are, good friends at college, with always someone to talk to. Being able to meet people that I could connect with once I got to college is really the best way to get settled in and it has made my experience at UNK so much more enjoyable! It was truly an unforgettable experience and my friends remind me of that everyday!” --Jenna Beller, Lindsay NE
“What I really enjoyed about the First Adventure was getting to meet an awesome group of incoming freshmen and right away establishing the common interest of being outdoors and taking on new experiences. I was glad to meet a group of people that enjoy the same stuff I do.” --Addie Hansen, Lincoln NE
