Programs and Organizations

First Year wants to ensure that every student has a smooth transition to UNK.  In order to do this, we have several programs that will help ensure students are not only prepared to be a college student, but prepared to be an engaged college student.

Careers with First Years

Career Fair

October 2nd 2:30pm-4:00pm

NSU, Fireplace Lounge

Level 1: 2:30-3:00

A chance for first year students to learn about career fairs in a comfortable environment with their peers.

Level 2: 3:00-4:00

An optional opportunity to interact with employers--participate in practice job interviews--have their résumé critiqued, and get advice about professional attire and introductions.

Just by attending…

Students will also have the opportunity to sign-up for business cards and a pre-printed nametag on a lanyard for the career fair.

Visit the First Year table at the Career Fair to prep before or debrief after!  We also have some stellar jobs available, so stop and say “hi” to learn more.

First Year's Online Orientation

The First Year Program Office wants to ensure a successful start to your first year at UNK. In order to do that, we want to encourage you to take this short online transition course on Canvas.  Although this course will review some of the things you learned at New Student Enrollment, this course will go more in depth with campus information and will also teach you how to have a successful transition to UNK prior to move-in day.

Through this course you will:

  • Discover more in depth information about UNK resources like:
    • Student Engagement
    • Fraternity & Sorority Life
    • Residence Life
    • Academic & Career Services
    • Student Health and Counseling
    • and many more
  • Learn how to use your Canvas, Blackboard and myBlue accounts.
    • Understanding the basics of these two accounts prior to your arrival will put you steps ahead in the classroom.

Once you complete the Summit, you will be able to go back into Canvas and access the information you learned at any time.

To access the Freshman Summit, go to your Canvas account.

Your login credentials will be the first part of your email address before the @ sign. The password will be the same as your Loper email password.

A first year student summer adventure!

First Adventure logo
FIRST Adventure is an inaugural summer program sponsored by the Offices of First Year Program and Outdoor Adventure, dedicated to helping a small group of students get to know each other, the campus, and themselves prior to their college arrival.

  • One session capped at 25 students each, is offered July 20-23.
  • Cost of this entire experience (including meals, travel, lodging, materials etc.) as well as other FIRST Adventure events through out the first year is $180 (prior to June 30) or $200 (after June 30).
