Jeff Shaw has had a scientific journey that has taken him from an undergraduate researcher at UNK to a scientific account manager at Roche Diagnostics, one of the world’s leading biotech companies. During his talk, Jeff will review his experiences at each stage of his career, including the research he did and the mentors who advised him along the way. The story begins with his work in an evolutionary biology lab with mycorrhizal fungi. From there, he’ll transition to work with central metabolism in Salmonella and how it contributes to the bacteria’s success as a pathogen. He’ll finish his research discussion with the work he did on Helicobacter pylori as a postdoc. Finally, Jeff will conclude the talk by discussing the opportunities that engaging in biological research afforded him and his perspectives on working in academia vs industry settings.
