The Orphan Train Colloquium will provide a platform to examine, study, and discuss the movement known as "The Orphan Train" (1854-1929) through multiple disciplines and perspectives. The colloquium has drawn presenters from the regional area in disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and arts. Events will be held October 2 and 3 on the UNK campus, The Archway, and the Museum of Nebraska Art. The colloquium will conclude on Wednesday evening with the opening night performance of the musical, Orphan Train. The orphan train movement was a supervised welfare program that transported children, generally abandoned, orphaned, or homeless, from urban areas on the east coast of the United States to foster and adoptive families in the rural Midwest and Great Plains. Operating over seventy-five years, some 200,000 children found new lives in small towns and farming communities. The program ended with the beginning of the Great Depression and the establishment of a formalized foster care system in large cities. Nearly 3,500 children settled with families in Nebraska.
