The idea was formed to create new drinks “named after the faces you see every day” at UNK. This gave the class the “sense of team” that Hollman was hoping for. Since the decision was made to use Brewed Awakening as part of this class project, Hollman explains that it’s “gotten quite a bit of steam.”

Entrepreneurship students from all over the world are encouraged to get involved with Cultivate via the Canvas page that the club is creating to expand their membership. Online students as well as international students will be able to join this organization through Canvas.

The club usually meets in West Center once a month, but it’s not unusual for them to decide to hang out in a more casual atmosphere such as Brewed Awakenings. A typical meeting might consist of discussing club business, listening to a guest speaker who is a local business leader, or taking a tour of one of the many businesses around Kearney.

In addition to his speaking engagements at UNK, Birge is also open to the idea of having interns work at Fast Forward. He recently had an extremely qualified intern reach out to him. As the student shared that he wanted to work at Fast Forward because he felt that the company solved real problems, Birge knew he had succeeded at creating “an environment around something more than just money.”

According to Layne Hudson, the current Vice-President of Communications for IDO, “the professors are great” and “very involved with IDO.” Hudson works hard “to make sure ID students are informed about all upcoming events and opportunities” available to them through this club.

True to the experiential learning that has long been the hallmark of classes at UNK, Brockmeier explains that he and Armagost prepare lessons that require the students to “do activities” that have a “real world” aspect. One example is when students are first asked to contemplate where they spend their money before beginning a project which, according to Brockmeier, requires them to “track every dollar” they spend.

For Novacek, who was able to participate in internships as well as work in the industry before graduation, he feels thankful that the opportunities he received at UNK helped him graduate without feeling a ‘huge shock” when he entered “the real world” of business.

Chloe Dakan, a senior business student who is majoring in marketing, states that making a fake business plan for a fleet of electrical cars for this competition “solidified what (she’s been) doing” in her classes. She stated that her team has “realized that choosing UNK was the best option for us” because they were not afraid to put to use, at this competition, the type of hands-on learning they experience in their college classes.

Klein starts each day traveling throughout the building where he gets to do what he enjoys the most, interacting with his colleagues. He eventually ends up at UNK’s student-run coffee shop Brewed Awakenings, the first major renovation project he worked on.

In 2014, Dr. Greg Benson took over the direction of the Supply Chain Management for UNK. He has grown the program to almost 70 students strong. Nebraska has a great deal of job demand for purchasing managers, logistics managers and distribution managers in the companies located in the state.

Our student spotlight is Guilia Napoli, who studies at the International University of Language and Media in Milan, Italy. During her time in the U.S., she was a part of the student project of Open for Business Magazine; a partnership involving the Office of International Education and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Rural Development.

Originally from Scandinavia, Dr. Sonja Bickford has had a plethora of experience abroad. Bickford has taken groups of students on trips, has been been instrumental in creating a partnership between UNK and a university in Finland, and has worked with the International programs on campus. She is currently a visiting faculty member in the department of Industrial Technology. Bickford elaborates here on her experiences abroad and her current projects.

Jeff Nordhues is a professor in Interior and Product Design at UNK. He and his wife founded a 'design and make' lighting studio in Kearney called Pax Modern. This entrepreneurial experience has allowed Nordhues to better teach his students in theoretical and practical ways.
