Although what they do is often behind the scenes, everyone at UNK’s College of Business and Technology is grateful for this great team of ladies. During this season of thanksgiving and joy, it seemed like the perfect time to tell each of them what a wonderful job they are doing and how much they mean to UNK.

Ashton Baxa began her journey at UNK lost on a campus visit, but ends it with two UNK degrees, an unforgettable study abroad experience to the Czech Republic, a fulfilling career at Intellicom, and many lifelong friendships.

A typical weekly meeting with UNK’s Cyber Club often involves students playing games such as chess, Exploding Kittens, or UNO. Around holidays, they indulge in themed potluck dinners where students might engage in foods that are spooky or ones they are encouraged to be thankful for.

The idea was formed to create new drinks “named after the faces you see every day” at UNK. This gave the class the “sense of team” that Hollman was hoping for. Since the decision was made to use Brewed Awakening as part of this class project, Hollman explains that it’s “gotten quite a bit of steam.”

Entrepreneurship students from all over the world are encouraged to get involved with Cultivate via the Canvas page that the club is creating to expand their membership. Online students as well as international students will be able to join this organization through Canvas.

Troy Bruntz pursued his MBA because it was required of him to assume the role of President and CEO at McCook Community Hospital. He chose his alma mater because he knew the quality education he would receive. He quickly realized how applicable the degree was to running a hospital and how his ties with UNK could contribute to improving healthcare in rural areas.

EPT is an honorary organization consisting of students who are invited to join based on their academic performance. As part of the honor of being inducted into EPT, they have their “superior academic performance” recognized by other UNK students.

The members have visited the Lincoln Air Show with plans to take other tours of aviation museums and facilities during the school year. Guest speakers will be brought in to “discuss their aviation careers and provide networking opportunities in the aviation industry.”

The club usually meets in West Center once a month, but it’s not unusual for them to decide to hang out in a more casual atmosphere such as Brewed Awakenings. A typical meeting might consist of discussing club business, listening to a guest speaker who is a local business leader, or taking a tour of one of the many businesses around Kearney.

The AG Business Club meets monthly in West Center with no set time to join. Interested students simply need to show up. Like UNK in general, this club has a relaxed, family atmosphere that is guaranteed to make its members feel welcome.

Colton Stuhr explains that the Supply Chain Management program at UNK, which boasts an impressive 100% employment rate for its graduates, listened to the community to learn what was needed and then proceeded to help students grow into workers who have “all the right tools and skill sets” to fill the many opportunities available to them in Kearney. In addition to his speaking engagements at UNK, Birge is also open to the idea of having interns work at Fast Forward. He recently had an extremely qualified intern reach out to him. As the student shared that he wanted to work at Fast Forward because he felt that the company solved real problems, Birge knew he had succeeded at creating “an environment around something more than just money.”

The meetings are, according to Dr. Borchers, “very open” to anyone who wishes to attend although most students are involved in accounting, finance, economics, and data analytics. Each fall semester, Beta Alpha Psi has a kickoff meeting where they provide pizza for students along with the chance to learn more about this prestigious honorary organization.

According to Layne Hudson, the current Vice-President of Communications for IDO, “the professors are great” and “very involved with IDO.” Hudson works hard “to make sure ID students are informed about all upcoming events and opportunities” available to them through this club.

True to the experiential learning that has long been the hallmark of classes at UNK, Brockmeier explains that he and Armagost prepare lessons that require the students to “do activities” that have a “real world” aspect. One example is when students are first asked to contemplate where they spend their money before beginning a project which, according to Brockmeier, requires them to “track every dollar” they spend.

For Adam Spanier and JD Stone, seeing each other in Discovery Hall this fall will add a new dimension to their long-standing friendship. Both Spanier and Stone are newly hired instructors at the College of Business and Technology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Between them, they bring a wealth of knowledge to share with the students who will be fortunate enough to take their classes.

Dr. Li shares that her favorite part of teaching involves communicating with people. Her desire is to help students make the connection between what they learn in school and what they will do in the real world. She wants to help them discover their personal interests in accounting to help them prepare for their future professions.

Mitch Peters graduated from UNK's MBA program in fall of 2022 and was recently awarded CBT's MBA Honored Graduate. He believes that the rigor and affordability of the program make it unbeatable and that it has prepared him for any situation in his career.

For Novacek, who was able to participate in internships as well as work in the industry before graduation, he feels thankful that the opportunities he received at UNK helped him graduate without feeling a ‘huge shock” when he entered “the real world” of business.

When Renshaw, an HR manager at Lutz, a business solution firm with locations in Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island, visits UNK, she knows she will be steered in the right direction. Thanks to the efforts of folks like Dustin Favinger, Director of CBT’s Career Center, Lutz is able to hire 10-15 UNK interns a year. In fact, 20-25 of the firm’s 315 employees are UNK alumni.
