MGT 405 = Game Changer

This past Fall semester I was able to take a course that I had been looking forward to since Dr. Envick started at UNK. She had talked about creating a course in which groups of students would be able to design and produce their own board games. My family and I are board game fanatics, so I knew immediately that I wanted to try it out.

The class started with Dr. Envick providing us with the textbook, resources and information in order to start coming up with ideas right away. We were put into groups and started creating. My group of 2 other students and myself came up with our idea fairly early in the idea phase. We decided to create a trivia/charades game for popular dances throughout history. We did hours and hours of researching 10-15 dances from the 1910s, 1920s, 1930s; all the way to the 2010s. We knew we wanted to incorporate a record and music notes into the design of the board, and we used a tie dye background. We decided on the name “Dancing Through the Decades.”

As part of the course we were required to make a prototype of our board and game pieces. We were then able to test out the game by playing it with friends and family and receiving their feedback. This led us to the ordering of the official game from boardgamesmaker.com. Once our products came in Dr. Envick took them to other classes for students to play and rank.

I have enjoyed every course I have taken with Dr. Envick, but this one merged both of my passions of entrepreneurship and design. Since I enjoy board games so much, and now that I know how, I might have to create more in the future!
