This internship was indescribable. I learned so much about the industry and what it takes, from every level, how to be a successful company and individual. Graybar made sure I got to learn the ins and outs of their business. It showed me what I liked and disliked. I specifically like the opportunity of shadowing the Outside Sales Reps and all the managers, as those are the areas of distribution I would like to pursue in my career. Denver Graybar is a service center, which means they are much larger than most locations and have so many more resources. They have a lot of different areas within their branch that not most locations have. Everyone here is very helpful and willing to help an individual learn and meet their career goals. Also, this is a Fortune 500 company, therefore you see how a big company operates and why people stay here for years. Learn as much as you can during your internship. It is a chance to see how companies operate and drive business. - Lindsey Trotter, Arcadia, UNK Senior, Industrial Distribution, Graybar Electric Company in Denver (Summer 2019)
As my career goals are to become an Ag/Commercial Lender, this internship provided me the opportunity to shadow both of these daily roles. It also allowed me to become comfortable with the bank environment, the documents needed to complete loans, and an overall basic knowledge of the bank's terminology. I was in charge of creating a spreadsheet fair lending audit of some of the bank's files. The internship provided a full array of responsibilities that allowed me to learn a lot of quality information regarding the lending department. The staff is very eager to teach things to the intern and that made for a great work environment. 1) Do not be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are a part of learning process. 2) Do not be complacent. If there is nothing to do, ask to watch or shadow someone. 3) Be sure to read relevant information regarding your major leading up to the internship and even upon completion. This internship allowed me to experience a lively work environment and acquire knowledge for future career advancement. - Garrett Schwanke, UNK Senior; Agribusiness, First State Bank and Trust Co in Fremont (Summer 2019)
"When I think about my future, what is important to me is a community that is supportive [and] a flexible schedule so I still have time to see my peers and family members.”
