Celebrating Social Work Month

Every year during March, social workers are recognized in celebration of National Social Work Month. Often viewed as more than a profession, social work is a calling and a personal mission that compels people to create a more compassionate, moral and inclusive society. Those who enter the field have a heart for making a difference—along with a strong education to be as effective as possible in supporting individuals and communities.
Meeting Needs
Two years ago, the University of Nebraska at Kearney launched an online Bachelor of Science in Social Work and an online social work minor. Among only a handful of online undergraduate programs in this field nationwide, these educational options are meeting current workforce demands in human services areas such as medical and public health; mental health and substance abuse; child, family and school; and geriatrics. Qualified professionals are needed to address the shortage of social workers, particularly in rural communities.
Going Further
The online bachelor’s degree qualifies graduates to work as generalist social workers, which can lead to positions as social workers, case managers, case management aids, community outreach workers, rehabilitation caseworkers, eligibility workers or human services specialists. Because UNK’s online bachelor’s program holds additional accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), graduates have advanced standing to start a graduate-level program in social work, which reduces cost and time toward a master’s degree.
Recognizing Success
During this month of celebration, UNK eCampus would like to honor the graduates of social work programs and also the faculty and staff in the Department of Social Work. We are grateful that your passion—along with what you teach, learn and do within your discipline—will continue to positively impact our society each and every day.
