Certification and Licensure

The US Department of Education requires UNK to notify applicants who have an out-of-state address and are interested in or enrolled in degree programs that lead to state licensure or certification.

Certification and licensure requirements differ from state to state. We are required to notify you if the program you are interested in or enrolled in will meet educational requirements to apply for certification or licensure in your home state. The official categories are: Meets; Does Not Meet; and Have Not Made a Determination if it Does or Does Not Meet.

A Does Not Meet or Have Not Made a Determination status does not indicate that you will be unable to obtain certification or licensure in your home state. Please check with your advisor, department chair, or certification officer for further details. Contact information for each program is found in the program sections below.

Common causes for a Does Not Meet or Have Not Made a Determination include the following:

Your home state certification agency requires a transcript review prior to application for certification.
Your home state does not have an equivalent for an endorsement completed in Nebraska.
Your home state requires you to take an additional course or exam specific to that state’s history or laws. These courses and exams are not offered in Nebraska.

Athletic Training (MAT)

All candidates for certification must earn a degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE accredited institution such as UNK, which qualifies them to take the national board exam. Candidates must pass the board exam before they are eligible to apply for state certification or licensure. The determination in the table below assumes those two requirements have been met. Other states may require fingerprinting and CPR/AED certification. Texas also requires applicants to pass an exam in Jurisprudence based on Texas law.

All graduates must take and pass the NCE exam in order to be eligible to apply for licensure. In some states listed as "Determination Has Not Been Made," graduates must also submit a transcript to the state certifying agency for review in order to determine eligibility to apply for licensure. Colorado and Kansas require a transcript review.

Because all states have different requirements, students pursuing licensure or certification as principals or superintendents who plan to work in states other than Nebraska should meet with the department chair, Dr. Mike Teahon, or the Director of Educator Certification. The Director of Educator Certification is Jenny Jansky (janskyjl@unk.edu). These individuals can help research and explain requirements for certification in other states.

UNK offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work. In order to apply for certification, applicants must have a degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. UNK's program is accredited.
