Community Service (off-campus) Work-Study positions provide opportunities for UNK students to work with community agencies that provide services to families and individuals in the Kearney area. The goal is to create in the student an awareness of social responsibility and its importance to the life of the community.

Arc of Buffalo County

Position Title: Program Manager 1 and 2

Position Description: Program Manager 1 and 2 are in charge of overseeing and organizing various programs in association with Arc of Buffalo County. Program manager 1 and 2 also serve as the volunteer coordinators and are responsible for helping to recruit and train all of the volunteers for the Arc's events. While working office hours, they assist with office organization, answering the phone and visiting with parents, etc. They help maintain payment databases and use email to communicate with program families. Program Manager 1 and 2 assist with development and production of The Arc's bi-monthly newsletter. They will provide limited Recreation Aide duties as needed.

Additional Information: Must be able to work well with people. Excellent computer skills. Good organizational skills. Project starts August. Hours are flexible, includes after school, evenings.

Arc of Buffalo County

Position Title: Recreation Aide (seeking 3)

Position Description: Recreation Aides will be assigned several adult males and females with developmental disabilities, taking them to community events and helping them to participate in individual and group activities. Providing transportation is essential. Aides will plan outings each month per person--check with AIR Director to see how many hours their budget allows each month (You can take more than one person. In fact, most people prefer going out with a friend or two). Check with people you are assigned to take out to see what activities they prefer (also, days, times, cost, etc.) and make a monthly calendar noting their activity, time of pick-up and amount of money they will need for each activity. When taking people home, always wait until they have entered their home before driving away. Recreation Aides will also be expected to help with large group activities such as Honey Sunday, dances, picnics, etc. and keep a record of every outing (hours, & name of people), and mileage incurred (from the time you pick up a person to the time you drop them off) so that they may be reimbursed for travel costs and keep track of hours worked.

Additional Information: Must work well with people, especially adult men, with developmental disabilities. Be available for the Arc activities listed above - generally between 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and some daytime hours on weekends. Candidate must have a safe, reliable car, proof of car insurance, and excellent driving record. Candidate must be at least 19 years of age.

Buffalo County Historical Society Trails and Rails Museum

Position Title: Tour Guide

Position Description: Give complete tours to visitors through our 6 historic, turn-of-the-century buildings and the train. During down time, buildings need dusted and swept, displays may need switched out or touched up, weeds may need pulled, the archive department may need help with organizing and filing papers and normal office assistance. Position available Memorial Day through Labor Day only. Mon-Sat 10-6; Sun 1-5.

Position Title: BCHS Associate

Position Description: Give tours as needed. Assist guests in gift shop, help organize and file for the archive department, assist director with event planning, tracking inventory, dusting and sweeping the buildings, and other day-to-day activities. Position available Mon-Fri, 1:00 to 5:00 - depending on student's schedule.

Additional Information: Prefer someone that enjoys working with the public and talking a lot with our visitors. Being able to count change is also preferred. The associate may be left in charge so director can attend meetings, etc.

Position Description: Under the direction of the Park Superintendent, responsible for carrying out various tasks involved in recreation program operation and campground and picnic operation and maintenance. Position Description: The KPS Foundation Marketing Intern will learn various aspects of marketing a nonprofit to multiple groups including Kearney Public Schools Staff, Alumni, and Community Supporters.

Merryman Performing Arts Center

Merryman Performing Arts Management Team

Position Description: The student will have the opportunity to be a part of the management team at the Merryman Performing Arts Center.  The Merryman, a 760 –seat professional theater,  a venue,  presents 8 to 10 nationally touring shows, including theater, music and dance. In addition, the Merryman “hosts” nearly 400 events a year.

The internship will work directly with Merryman Director and Technical/Operations Director

Position Requirements: Customer service experience required,Good communication skills, Excel, data base, social media management experience helpful. Some evening availability requested.

Position Duties:
• Assist the Box Office staff in day -to-day operations, including ticket sales. Updating and maintain data bases, for electronic media and direct mailing purposes.
• Serve as a member of the  Event staff during regular business hours and during other Merryman events.  Requested participation for evening events:  Sept 21 , Oct 19, Nov 6,  Nov 21,  Feb 2, , March 6, April 10,  April 24 April 30  4 p.m.- 9 p.m. Weekly work schedule to be determined, estimated hours 5 to 8  hours per week .
• Assist with Elementary Student Matinee programs.  March 5, April 10, April 24, April 12  (note all dates are requested, not mandatory for this position).
•  Optional : attend and participate in activities related to the Kearney Cultural Partners, a consortium of 14 non-profit museums, theaters, performing arts organizations and attractions who seek to collaborate, and promote the Kearney as a Cultural destination .

Hours/Wages:  Approximately 10 hours per week. Starting wage is $9.00 per hour.

RYDE Transit – Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska

Position Title: Transportation Assistant

Position Description: Transportation Assistant is responsible for assisting the public transit management staff with daily duties to support the operation of the RYDE Transit public transportation. Duties include: Transportation for transit vehicles to service, repair, or other transit locations. Light maintenance of transit vehicles -- windshield wipers & light bulbs, inside and outside detail of transit vehicles. Routine Maintenance of new transit facility -- cleaning, installing, & general maintenance up keeping. Experience in maintenance, vehicle maintenance, carpentry, data networking (electrical) and operation of large vehicles or farm equipment a plus.

Additional Information: This is a safety sensitive position, with pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing (required by FTA). Applicants must have a valid driver's license. Employment hours are flexible with approximately 20-25 hours per week, (open to a position with Work Study Eligibility) between the hours of 8:00am and 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday.
