J-1 Enrollment Regulations

Concurrent Enrollment Approval

A J-1 student at UNK may enroll concurrently in two USCIS-approved schools provided that:

  1. Through the combined enrollment , you are enrolled for the equivalent of a full course of study (12 hours).
  2. You are enrolled in a degree program at the institution that issued you the DS-2019.
  3. Attendance at the other school is with the permission of the UNK Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).
  4. The coursework at the other school will be accepted for fulfilling degree requirements at UNK.
  5. You have provided evidence to the ARO that you are taking a full course of study.
  6. *Only one course that is designated as distance learning may count toward establishing a full course of study. Of the required 12 hours only 3 hours may be counted from a course designated as distance learning.

Remember: The institution that issues you the DS-2019 is in all respects responsible for all regulatory record-keeping and reporting requirements relating to the student.

*SEVIS Regulation for Distance Classes

For J-1 students enrolled in classes for credit or classroom hours, no more than one class or three credit hours per semester may be counted toward the full course of study requirement if the class is taken online, web-based or through distance education and does not require the student's physical attendance for classes, examinations or other purposes integral to completion of the class. A full course of study at UNK is 12 credits for undergraduates, 9 credits for graduates and 6 credits for graduate assistants.
