About the Specialty License Plates

UNK specialty license plates are all alpha numeric license plates. Plate numbers will be assigned in the order applications are received. UNK specialty plates are not eligible for special messages.

Once 250 applications are received, the applications will be submitted to the DMV. You will then be notified by the DMV when your specialty plate is ready to be picked up. Additional fees for production of the license plates and new registration may be charged by the County at the time of pick up.

All applications submitted after the 250 initial applications will be processed directly through the DMV website (we’ll let you know when that change occurs).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the deadline for submitting my application?

The faster we collect 250 applications, the faster the plates will be available. Please submit your application as soon as possible. We plan to do the largest promotional push prior to December, then will evaluate.

Can I put a personal message on my UNK license plate?

Messages or “vanity plates” are not an option on the UNK plates at this time. The DMV assigns all organizational plates an alpha-numeric license plate number.

What number will I be assigned by the DMV?

The DMV assigns alpha numeric plate numbers in the next available order. Numbers will not be 1-250 but will be in a sequential alpha-numeric order.

Can I use a credit or debit card to pay the $70 fee?

UNK is now offering online payment of the $70 fee. Pay securely online via credit card.

Does UNK get any portion of the $70 application fee?

No, UNK does not receive any portion of the $70 fee, which goes to the State of Nebraska for processing of the application and the production of the plates.

If 250 applications are not collected, will my $70 be refunded?

Yes, if we don’t collect 250 applications, you will be refunded.

How will I know when my license plate is ready?

UNK will announce when we’ve reached the 250 required applications. The DMV will contact each applicant when your plate is ready to be picked up at your County Treasurer’s Office.

How much will it cost me to change my plates when I pick up my new UNK license plate at the County Treasurer’s Office?

There may be additional fees. Each county in Nebraska has different fees, which may include: $6.50 production fee, and/or a $5.50 new/early registration fee. Please contact your County Treasurer’s Office for information related to fees that may be incurred when switching license plates before it is time to renew your registration.

I live in another state. Can I get a UNK license plate?

Only vehicles registered in Nebraska are eligible for UNK license plates.

I have more questions that pertain to my current license plate or questions not related to the UNK license plate application. Who can help me?

Please visit the DMV website for more information about your current license plate and/or registering a vehicle in Nebraska. For questions specifically about the UNK plate, email Kelly Bartling at bartlingkh@unk.edu
