Alex will present "Follow The Leader: Recognizing Our Ancestors, Forging Our Own Paths" - Often times when we think of black history, we are oversaturated with two iconic figures: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X. There seems to be somewhat of a time gap between 1960’s and today in that respect. There are little to no uniformly understood civil rights leaders today in the age of pop culture, social media, and reality TV. Generally, a great leader is one who knows how to be a great follower first but the question begs who do millennials have to look up to? As the old saying goes “You’ll never know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been.” This multimedia presentation seeks to have participants to recall significant leaders of the past in African American history and their trajectory to the present day with the implications on identity politics and social structures in the African American community.
