The UNK 2018 Violin/Viola Workshop will be led by guest clinician Dr. Eric Olson, Director of the Pre-Conservatory Program at Shattuck-St. Mary's School, MN. Dr. Olson will present two pedagogical sessions and conduct a violin/viola masterclass for the workshop. This event is free and open to string educators and violin/viola students from grades 6 and up. Workshop schedule: Session I (1:00pm - 2:00pm): Left-Hand and Bow Arm Techniques. Dr. Olson will discuss essential techniques for violin and viola players, including finger patterns, shifting, use of arm weight, etc. Examples and sample exercises will be given during the session for participants to try out. Please bring your instrument! Session II (2:05pm - 3:00pm): Putting Things Together and Developing a Practice Routine. Dr. Olson will present strategies in developing a good practice session. Suggestions will be provided to facilitate technique and interpretation work in your study of violin and viola. Participants will be given hands-on exercises. Break (3:00pm - 3:15pm) Refreshment will be provided by the workshop. Violin/Viola Masterclass (3:15pm - 5:00pm): Participants are welcome to present a complete piece/movement or excerpts (e.g. All-State excerpts, excerpts from etudes, etc.) *Dr. Eric Olson will also perform with the Frahm-Lewis Trio in the UNK Concerts-on-the-Platte Faculty/Guest Artist Recital on Monday, November 5 at 7:30pm in the UNK Fine Arts Recital Hall. All workshop participants are invited to attend the recital (free and open to the public). Registration: Although the event is free, advance registration is required.
