New and returning UNK students start the academic year by participating in an exciting variety of entertainment and initiation events. UNK’s Homecoming Week is an eagerly awaited fall event that generates excitement both within the UNK community as well as in the city of Kearney. From competitions such as Lip SYNC to inspiring talks by distinguished visitors to the grand Homecoming Parade, this is a week when the spirit of the Blue and Gold soars high among students, alumni, faculty, and administrators alike. The families of our students are valued members of the UNK community, and our calendar has an entire day dedicated to honoring them. On Family Day, you’ll find the UNK campus brimming with activities designed to allow students to collaborate with their families, attend musical events, enjoy food fests, cheer at Loper games, and more. UNK enjoys a nationwide reputation for excellence in undergraduate research, and the annual Student Research Day is an occasion when our undergraduate researchers take center stage. This is when students who have collaborated with faculty on research and other creative projects throughout the year share their findings and results with the rest of the UNK community.

A UNK education is excellent preparation for a successful career, and nowhere is this more evident than at the annual Career Fair when employers from across the state gather together at the Health and Sports Center to meet, greet, and recruit UNK students.

The education programs at UNK enjoy an outstanding reputation in the region. Every year our campus hosts representatives from over 70 school systems across 11 states who are here to interview UNK education majors for positions in their schools.

UNK students are routinely inspired by a faculty who are dedicated to their academic, professional, and personal growth and success. At Awards Night, the UNK Greek community honors these mentors with the annual Outstanding Professor of the Year and Outstanding Faculty Advisor awards.

A powerful example of our community’s commitment to making education more affordable, our annual 5K Walk/Run, held every spring, attracts more than 250 participants from within our student body and across the city of Kearney to help raise money for the Student Leadership Scholarship Fund. Diversity—of experiences, opinions, and cultures—forms an integral part of the UNK experience. The annual Foreign Language Day brings together the UNK community—as well as over 350 students from more than 14 area high schools—to discover, learn about, and experience different cultures from around the world. Activities range from various language and cultural events to multicultural song and dance performances to an international buffet that features cuisine of different ethnic origins.
