Your Academic Comeback is a program for First Year students who complete their first semester of their first year at UNK with under a 2.0 GPA, which places them on academic probation. This program is an essential piece of support that will help get students back on track academically, so that they can avoid academic suspension.
In this program, students will meet with a Comeback Coach, who are professionals in the offices of First Year Program, Learning Commons, Academic and Career Services and Admissions. These coaches will work closely with these students and the Learning Commons tutors, and success coaches to ensure that they are utilizing resources to the best of their ability to make sure that they can make their first year COMEBACK!
Academic Probation/Suspension in the first year explained:
An under 2.0 GPA in the first semester means that the student is placed on academic probation. There are several outcomes after probation....
1. If the second semester is once again under a 2.0 GPA, the student will likely be placed on Academic Suspension.
Students who are academically suspended are dismissed from UNK for one academic year, unless they have a successful appeal. We highly recommend completing the appeal process, and students should reach out to Amy Rundstrom, rundstromal@unk.edu, in Academic and Career Services, to learn more about this process.
You can access the suspension appeal form at this link:

Federal financial aid eligibility always requires that you meet separate academic requirements. If you don’t meet the standards of progress for two consecutive semesters, you will no longer be eligible for financial aid. You will be put on financial aid suspension, and will have to appeal. Please contact Mary Sommers (MSAB Financial Aid, sommersm@unk.edu) to discuss how to move forward with the appeal process.
You can access the standards of progress requirements, as well as the guidelines for writing an appeal letter at this link, http://www.unk.edu/offices/financial_aid/undergraduate_sap.php
1. If the second semester GPA is above a 2.0 (but the cumulative GPA is still below a 2.0), then the student is still on academic probation, but is not suspended.
2. If the cumulative (overall) GPA is above a 2.0, then you are no longer on probation!
Comeback Coach: A UNK staff member who will mentor students through the probation process.
Success Coach: A UNK student who is employed by the Learning Commons who will help develop a tailored success plan for the student on probation.
Probation: When a student's cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0.
Suspension: When a student is on probation, and then the following semester GPA is below the required level. The required GPA varies based on the total number of credit hours the student has attempted. The full policy can be found here, https://catalog.unk.edu/undergraduate/academics/academic-regulations/academic-requirements-good-standing/
**It is important to reach out to the Offices of Academic and Career Services and Financial Aid when placed on suspension.
Cumulative GPA: The grade point average that is based on all of the grades that the student has earned during their time at UNK (grades from other institutions in the University Nebraska system count as well).
Semester GPA: The grade point average that is only based on the students grades from that semester.
Good Academic Standing: When the student's cumulative GPA is at or above a 2.0
Appeal: The process a student may complete in order to (possibly) remove themselves from academic suspension. You can access the appeal form by going to this link, http://www.unk.edu/academic_affairs/asa_forms/academic_suspension.php.
