An AmeriCorps Program
Individuals wishing to serve in an AmeriCorps position with this program must be United State citizens, 18 years old or older, and have obtained a High School diploma. Applications to serve with the Rural Corps Program must be made through this web site:
All positions with this AmeriCorps Program will be either with the Kearney Community Learning Center - a before and after school program - which provides academic based programs and enrichment activities for children living in disadvantaged circumstances. Individuals wishing to serve with this program must be available from 3:00-6:00 pm Monday through Friday.
Or, the other opportunities to serve are based within Kearney Public School classrooms with ages ranging from Preschool through High School. Available times would be 8:00 am-3:30 pm Monday through Friday with some additional flexible hours as needed. Youth being served by AmeriCorps Members in the school classroom, are struggling students in need of additional tutoring and on-on-one assistance due to various challenges. Some are in need of Alternative Education, assistance with language, behavioral issues, etc.
The grant cycle starts September 1, 2012 and ends August 31, 2013. Contracted hours must be completed during this time frame and are established based on work with the Host Site Supervisor and the needs of the program. After applying, eligible individuals will be contacted for an interview, once "hired" will receive an orientation to the AmeriCorps Program, on site training to accomplish the specific tasks required and will have opportunities to receive other professional development training at AmeriCorps team meetings and events. This is a service-learning program and Members will be required to complete a specific number of training events and reflection activities related to the program.
Individuals serving in an AmeriCorps receive a stipend, paid monthly, and distributed over the months of the service term. Following their completed hours, and exit from the program, Members receive an Education Award to apply towards their student loans or for additional tuition. Twenty available positions will be filled, 9 each in the before/after school program and 9 in the classrooms. Two positions will serve with the Rural Corps Program Director, through the UNK Office for Service-Learning.
