Academic Policies Handbook

Degree Programs

Students are required to meet the degree requirements that are in place at the time of matriculation. If a student takes longer than five calendar years to complete a degree, UNK reserves the right to require the student to meet the most recent requirements for graduation. Curriculum changes or modifications require that all new program requirements be met regardless of course work previously completed.

Students who matriculate at a Nebraska Community College and then transfer to UNK within three years will be allowed to meet the degree requirements that were in place at UNK at the time of their matriculation at the Community College.

MAJOR/MINOR POLICY
Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Fine Arts

  1. A valid degree program for the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or the Bachelor of Fine Arts shall consist of one of the following:

A). A major program consisting of 30-36 hours and a minor program consisting of 18-24 hours. The major and minor cannot be from the same academic department unless duplication of coursework between the two is limited to 6 credit hours or less.
    or
B). A major program consisting of 30-36 hours and a second major of 30-36 hours of which 24-30 hours (respectively) is unduplicated coursework
    or
C). A comprehensive major of 42-62 hours. If a student elects to pursue a minor, it may not be from the same academic department unless the duplication of coursework between the two is limited to 6 credit hours or less. Pairing a minor with a comprehensive major could increase a student's total required hours.

  2. Students wishing to earn a second different bachelors degree may do so only upon completion of 30 additional hours beyond the minimum required for the first degree.

The undergraduate degrees offered at UNK are listed in the "Academic Information" section of the UNK Catalog along with the specific requirements of each degree. Students should carefully review this section of the catalog to determine specific degree requirements. Students with questions regarding their program of study should contact the Advising Center or the Office of Student Records and Registration.
