Benefits of Membership
Academics
A common misconception is that joining a sorority will
take away from classes and study time. In actuality, sororities at the
University of Nebraska - Kearney provide study rooms, faculty advisors, and peer mentoring and tutoring to aid members in
their scholastic efforts. The 450+ members of the Panhellenic
Council represent a broad array of majors, this ensures that a new
member will find specialized help from within their sorority or
perhaps establish a collaboration with a member in another sorority.
In addition, PHC sororities have minimum GPA requirements that new
members must maintain in order to become active members. Finally, each sorority is ranked by GPA semesterly, providing friendly competition
amongst the sororities in PHC to further encourage academic
excellence.
Leadership and Character
Character is the quality that a woman possess to assume a place as a respected, mature leader in her community and in her work. The sorority community fosters an environment for individuals to cultivate the initiative, poise, and responsibility that form the foundation of a character. As a sorority member gains experience and gathers advice from the leaders of her sorority, she can learn from their success and develop strong leadership qualities of her own.
Sisterhood
Probably the most rewarding aspect of joining sorority
life is experiencing the sisterhood of a sorority's members. It
provides the opportunity for incoming students to immediately find a
close-knit group of ladies who are sure to become lifelong friends.
At a university of 7,100+ student, sorority life allows it newest members to
find their niche both on the University of Nebraska - Kearney campus and
in the Kearney community. In order to become an eligible member of PHC,
a student needs to be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours per
semester) at the University of Nebraska - Kearney and be a member of one
of the sororities that is a recognized chapter of the Panhellenic
Council.
Campus Involvement
When a new member joins a sorority, she immediately becomes part of an organization of unique and diverse individuals. She has the ability to cultivate lasting relationships with both sisters from her sorority and other members of the sorority and fraternity community. Also, there is an endless array of social opportunities available to sorority members to mix and establish networking connections with classmates, non-members of the Greek community, and university staff and faculty. Additionally, PHC sororities have ample support and vast connections with alumni. This provides the future-minded member the chance to access an already existing network of successful people who are ready to assist in furthering a sister's career.
The Panhellenic Creed
"We,
the undergraduate members of women's fraternities, stand for good
scholarship, for guarding of good health, for maintenance of fine
standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college
community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with
its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity
activities. We, the fraternity women of
America, stand for service through the development of character inspired
by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service,
through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive
to live."
