The University of Nebraska at Kearney provides high-speed Internet access for all students in the residence halls and computer labs. We manage the amount of traffic going to and coming from the Internet. So many peer-to-peer applications may not work well. Internet-based games may need to be adjusted on a case-by-case basis to function properly. Contact the Helpdesk at 865-8363 for more information.
Peer-to-peer applications allow users to open their computers to the internet and participate in large-scale file sharing. They may illegally acquire copyrighted materials, and then illegally distribute these copyrighted files.
Usually these applications automatically share files from the user's disk to other users worldwide unless specific actions are taken to prevent this. Installing and utilizing peer-to-peer applications violates the Guidelines for the Use of Computing Resources at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Sharing copyrighted materials without permission can result in legal action by the copyright holders. Federal law requires that the University of Nebraska at Kearney take immediate action when notified that someone on our network is distributing any type of copyrighted materials.
Under the Peer-to-Peer Guidelines set forth by Information Technology Services, the use of any "file-sharing" or Peer-to-Peer software is prohibited. If you are using a file-sharing application, you are putting yourself at risk of potentially serious consequences. To protect yourself, please remove peer-to-peer applications, or turn off file-sharing on your application.
If you don't know how to disable file-sharing, please choose a link below and follow the instructions.
