Single-space the lines in a document using Microsoft Office 2007

You may have noticed while working in the new Office 2007 that the default spacing looks like a double-space.  Actually, the default document spacing for any blank document is 1.15, with slightly more space between paragraphs.

You can single-space all or part of a document.  Changes that you make to the spacing are saved when you save the document, but you can make additional changes at any time.

 

Single-space the selected text

1.  Select the text that you want to change

2.  On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Line Spacing.

3.  Click 1.0

4.  To eliminate additional spacing between paragraphs in the document, do the following:

a.  Select the paragraphs you want to change

b.  On the Page Layout tab, in the Paragraph group, under Spacing, click the arrow next to the After box until the value is 0 pt.

OR

a.  Select the paragraphs you want to change

b.  On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Line Spacing, and select Remove Space After Paragraph.

Note:  This procedure eliminates additional spacing between paragraphs only for the current document.

 

Single-space the entire document

 Some Quick Style sets and fonts use additional spacing between paragraphs.  In certain cases, for example the lines of an address, you might want single spacing between paragraphs.  You must eliminate the additional spacing in a separate step.

1.  On the Home tab, in the Styles group, right-click Normal,  and then click Modify.

2.  Under Formatting, click Single Space.

Formatting for the entire document changes to single spacing except you will still have a double-space between paragraphs.  If you want to eliminate spacing between the paragraphs also, see step 3.

3.  To eliminate additional spacing between paragraphs, do the following:

a.  Press CTRL + A to select the entire document.

b.  On the Page Layout tab, in the Paragraph group, under Spacing, click the arrow next to the After box until the value is 0 pt.

Note:  This procedure eliminates additional spacing between paragraphs only for the current document.

 

Set the default to single-spacing for all NEW documents

On the Home tab, click the Paragraph Dialog box Launcher.

1.  See diagram below.  In the Spacing section, click the arrow next to the After box until the value is 0 pt.

2.  In the Line Spacing box, select Single.

3.  Clear the number in the At box.

4.  Click Default, and then click Yes when prompted.
