What is a JPEG? What is a GIF? What is a PNG?
JPEG, GIF, and PNG compression create compressed files without losing substantial components. Figuring out when to use which format can be a puzzle. Often, the decision may rest on whether color or image detail is more important.
JPEG
- In computing, JPEG (pronounced JAY-peg); is a commonly used standard method of compression for photographic images.
| |
- The name JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group which is the name of the committee who created the standard.
- JPEG is a commonly used format for digital photographs.
| |
- JPEGs can save information on more than 16 million different colors and use more aggressive compression which has a less noticeable effect on photographs than it does on images with sharp edges.
| |
- Common file extensions: .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif and .jif
| |
- JPEG is the format most used for storing and transmitting photographs on the World Wide Web.
| |
GIF
- According to the creator of the GIF format, "GIF" is pronounced like the peanut butter brand, JIF, with a soft "g" To follow employees of CompuServe he would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF.
| |
- The name GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format which is a 8-bit-per-pixel bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987.
| |
- GIF is compressed by limited colors. The maximum number of colors a GIF file can contact is 256.
| |
- The color limitation makes the GIF format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color.
| |
- GIFs are well-suited for more simple images such as graphics or logos with solid areas of color.
| |
PNG
- In computing, PNG (pronounced ping);can also be spoken as "P-N-G" to avoid confusion with the network tool ping.
| |
- The PNG format is becoming an increasingly popular replacement for GIF images since it uses better compression techniques and does not have a limit of 256 colors.
| |
- PNG was created to improve and replace GIF format, as an image-file format.
