2012/2013 Federal Financial Aid Process

  1. To prepare for completion of the FAFSA, it is best for you and your parents ( if you are a dependent student as defined on the FAFSA ) to have a U. S. Department of Education PIN number. This allows you to complete the FAFSA entirely electronically. You can receive a PIN number at www.pin.ed.gov. You also have the option to apply for and receive a PIN number at the same time you complete the FAFSA.

     
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov. Be sure to use the FAFSA's IRS Data Retrieval Tool to transfer your 2011 federal income tax information directly from the IRS into the FAFSA. Doing so will help increase FAFSA accuracy and may speed up processing time. When completing the FAFSA, you will also be asked to indicate the schools to which you want your FAFSA information sent. You will need to list UNK's school code (002551) in order to give UNK access to your FAFSA information.

     
  3. Use your Department of Education PIN number to sign the FAFSA electronically. Remember, the dependent student and the parent who are submitting information each need separate PIN numbers to electronically sign the FAFSA.

     
  4. Some applications for federal student aid are selected for a process called verification. If your FAFSA is selected for verification, we are required by the Department of Education to collect additional documentation to make sure the FAFSA information is accurate. Those persons whose FAFSA applications are selected for verification will be notified by email at the email address you provided on your application for admission. It is important that you watch your email and respond to any requests for information right away. If you are selected for verification, there is a link on this website under the "Forms" heading that discusses the items needed for this review.
