I. Mission Statement
It is important for any organization or part thereof to have a written mission statement of its purpose. The mission of Facilities Management and Planning is to:
Provide prompt, courteous, and professional service to the campus community in the areas of building and grounds maintenance, environmental comfort, custodial services, facilities planning, space management, and construction.
I. Purpose
The purpose of this section is to provide a general overview of department policies and procedures.
II. General Policies and Procedures
A. Safety
It is the responsibility of every employee of the Facilities Management and Planning department to practice safe working habits and to report immediately any unsafe conditions to his or her supervisor. Any unsafe act will result in disciplinary action as prescribed in UNK Policy and Procedures.
B. Codes
All installation and maintenance work is to be in accordance with all applicable codes, rules, regulations and standards.
C. Labor Chargeback Rates
In general, labor is not charged back to departments even for non maintenance work.
D. Energy Conservation
The efficient use of energy is the responsibility of all Facilities Management and Planning personnel. All personnel are instructed in the proper use of energy consuming devices and are encouraged to make suggestions that may save energy.
E. Materials and Construction Standards
In an effort to standardize materials and equipment on campus to minimize downtime and stock levels a number of materials standards have been developed. These standards are maintained under a separate cover and are available for review upon request. The Associate Director for Facilities Planning, Space Management and Construction is responsible for maintaining these standards.
F. Training
Training in the Facilities Management and Planning department is ongoing. Where possible, individuals are sent off site to receive training in various programs. In house training is done in many areas. Often, the more experienced personnel are asked to instruct new employees.
G. Measurement of Success and Productivity
The success of the department is often measured by reviewing the number of complaints received from the campus community as well as benchmarking, surveys and other measurement devices.
H. Licenses
All Facilities Management and Planning Team Members are to maintain licenses appropriate to their position and as indicated in their classification descriptions.
All Electrician II's should have a state of Nebraska Journeyman's license.
All Electrician III's should have a state of Nebraska Contractor's license.
Other positions may require licensing dependent upon the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Under certain conditions and in collaboration with Human Resources, the license requirement may be waived for certain positions. However, possession of the necessary license prior to the end of a team member's initial probation may be required.
I. Quality
The University expects the highest quality of work from its team members. We strive to perform all work in a safe and professional manner with the highest level of craftsmanship. We install equipment/building components and make repairs with the long term effects of those installations and repairs in mind. Occasionally, due to budget restrictions we are forced to defer work or to “band aid” a repair. In these cases, we try to determine the long term solution and place it on a funding list to request additional monies.

Facilities Support Services/Business Operations is responsible for the following areas:
1. Facilities Service Desk
2. Transportation Services
3. Event Coordination
4. Business Operations
5. Central Stores
6. Mail delivery
7. Lockshop Services
8. Waste Services
9. Custodial Services
10. Grounds Services
Facilities Operations Services utilizes the zone concept in its approach to maintenance. It is divided into two areas:
1. Utilities Services
2. Building Automation Services
Facilities Planning, Space Management and Construction is responsible for the areas indicated in the area title including small construction projects, carpenter services and painter services.
